Nyborg – Rings – Faaborg Banen was a private Danish railway company . From September 1, 1897, it operated a railway line between Nyborg and Faaborg via rings on the island of Funen .

history

Nyborg –ringen – Faaborg Banen was a merger of two railway companies that had built the entire line between 1882 and 1897.

Rings – Faaborg Banen (RFB)

The company rings Faaborg Banen (RFB) built the section between rings and Faaborg.

While the Odense – Svendborg railway was already under construction, plans arose in the port city of Faaborg to connect this city to the country's rail network. Various proposals have been developed for this purpose. With the Railway Act of June 16, 1879 , the government approved the construction of a railway line from Rings to Faaborg on the state account. With Det Sydfyenske Jernbaneselskab (SFJ), founded May 28, 1874 in Rings, it was agreed that they would lease the line from the state and pay an annual lease amount to the state.

The track construction began in 1880, and work progressed rapidly. Part of the work done by SFJ. Since the local workforce was insufficient, workers from Sweden were entrusted with the construction. No major earthworks were necessary and at the beginning of May 1881 the rails supplied by the Union foundry in Dortmund were laid. The construction trains were hauled by the SFJ locomotive No. 4 Sct Jørgen . Starting from rings, Faaborg was reached on September 21, 1881. Trial operation began on March 15, 1882, the inauguration took place on March 31, 1882, and the railway was officially opened on April 1, 1882.

For the new route, three locomotives, seven passenger cars and 32 freight cars were bought on state account. These vehicles were assigned to the SJF vehicle fleet and given the property label RFB .

The line had its own main track in rings station. A 30-foot turntable was built in front of the warehouse and a staff house to the west of it. A two-hour engine shed was added to this.

The entire route was fenced off from the start of operations. This allowed the high speed of 75 km / h for the time to be driven.

Rings – Nyborg Banen (RNB)

The company rings Nyborg Banen (RNB) built the section between rings and Nyborg.

Interior Minister Hans Peter Ingerslev suggested the construction of this line as early as 1890, in 1891 there was a formal proposal for a railway line with a length of 26.8 kilometers. With the Railway Act of May 8, 1894 , construction was decided at the expense of the state treasury. SFJ was supposed to carry out the operation and, as with the rings – Faaborg line, the state wanted to raise three percent of the construction costs for the lease. SFJ was only willing to pay two percent and after lengthy negotiations SFJ got an agreement to operate on their terms.

Construction work began in 1896 and the line was completed on September 1, 1897, as the originally planned date on May 1, 1897 could not be kept due to problems with earthworks. There were five trains daily in each direction. Two locomotives and 27 cars, 20 of which were freight cars, were procured for the route . An opening ceremony did not take place. This can possibly be ascribed to the serious accident in Gentofte with 40 fatalities in the summer.

The construction accounts were drawn up in 1902. With a construction cost of 1,548,586 crowns , a saving of 26,414 crowns was recorded compared to the calculated sum.

Nyborg – Rings – Faaborg Banen

After the rings – Nyborg Bane opened in 1897, the two companies were merged to form Nyborg – Rings – Faaborg Banen , which organized operations for the entire route. The concession was transferred to Det Sydfyenske Jernbaneselskab (SFJ), founded on May 28, 1874 in rings .

After the referendum in Schleswig in 1920, operations on the Faaborg – Mommark ferry line began in 1922. This gave the route a supra-local importance and became part of a national connection between Sjælland and Sønderjylland . There were also plans to set up high-speed traffic on the line with a direct connection to Als via the railway ferry line. However, this idea was not pursued any further. The supra-local importance of the line declined sharply with the construction of Lillebæltsbroen in 1935 and the possibility of direct trains to Sønderborg .

The operation was carried out by Det Sydfyenske Jernbaneselskab (SFJ) until April 1, 1949. On that day the entire network of the SFJ was transferred to the Danske Statsbaner .

Operation by DSB

In the early years the permissible axle load was eleven tons. By 1960, DSB expanded the line with rails weighing between 37 and 45 kg per meter . This increased the permissible axle load to 16 to 20 tons.

On February 28, 1961, a freight train derailed on its way from Aarhus to Nyborg in Ullerslev . This completely blocked the København – Fredericia line . During these days the Ringebane was used for the first and only time as an alternative route for long-distance trains and international express trains between Odense and Nyborg. When two MA express trains collided near Odense on August 10, 1967 in Marslev between Odense and Nyborg and the main line was closed again, the line could no longer be used because it was temporarily closed.

In the last few years of operation, the passenger trains were driven with multiple units of the MP and MO series , to which additional passenger coaches were provided if necessary.

On May 26, 1962, the last passenger train drove over the entire route, from the following Monday only freight wagons were delivered on the ring – Fåborg section. The transport took place with the shunter stationed in Fåborg. At the same time, the Sønderborg – Mommark færge line was closed and the transfer of rail vehicles with the railway ferry that went into operation in 1922 and handed over to DSB in 1945 was discontinued. The signals were taken out of service in 1962/63 and the tracks and sidings that were no longer needed were removed at the end of the 1960s.

The freight traffic from rings to Faaborg continued until 1987, between rings and Corinth for a few years longer.

All the station buildings and ticket offices between Rings and Faaborg have been preserved, but the building in Grønderup is in poor condition. The buildings in Faaborg ,ringen, Højrup, Korinth and Pejrup were designed by the architect NPC Holsøe. The Faaborg railway station is based on the plans of Aarhus Østbanegård , Holsøe was designed five years earlier. A large building was erected in Corinth to incorporate an attractive waiting room for the lords of Arreskov and Brahetrolleborg. No building was planned in Espe, in 1883 a small station in a simple style was built in nine weeks and later expanded several times. The plans of Katterød station were drawn by Andreas Jensen, as were the stations on Svendborg – Faaborg banen .

Faaborg Kulturhistoriske Museer confirmed the cultural and historical value of the stations in spring 2009 and included them in the list of buildings with high conservation value.

The train stations between Nyborg andringen also still exist, only in Ørbæk this was demolished in 1968 to make way for the new town hall of Ørbæk municipality .

Syd Fyenske Veteranjernbane

VLTJ ML12 (Faaborg)

After the suspension of goods traffic on the Corinth – Faaborg section by DSB, the Syd Fyenske Veteranjernbane (SFvJ) was founded on January 9, 1988 with its seat in Faaborg. The route section was acquired by Fyns Amt on June 29, 1991 and made available to the Museum Railway Company for use. Official museum railroad operations began on May 28, 1992.

The museum railway carried trains to other cities on the island of Funen and in Jutland on special occasions. This traffic ended in March 2002 when the route between Rings and Corinth was no longer safe to drive.

In 2009 the Faaborg-Midtfyn municipality , which was established after the Danish regional reform, developed a renovation project to create better conditions for museum railroading. It was decided to convert the rings – Corinth route into a nature trail with a hiking and cycling path. In 2011 the rails were removed. The path was opened by the Minister for the Environment in September 2012.
