Railway Svendborg – Faaborg to Svendborg

The Odense – Nørre Broby – Faaborg line was a railway line on the Danish island of Funen . It runs from Odense via Nørre Broby to Faaborg and was built as a private railway . The Svendborgbane track was also used between Odense and Fruens Bøge .

Odense – Nørre Broby – Faaborg Jernbane

The "Brobybane" called route was built by the Odense – Nørre Broby – Faaborg Jernbane (ONFJ). The opening took place on October 3, 1906. Rails with a meter weight of 22.37 kg were used, which allowed an axle load of eleven tons.

The line was built on the basis of the Railway Act of April 24, 1903 . The license was granted on November 14, 1903. Det Sydfyenske Jernbaneselskab (SFJ) was responsible for the construction , which it then leased and operated.

On Tuesday, October 2, 1906, a special train left Copenhagen for the opening of the ONFJ. Among the passengers, in addition to the royal couple Frederik VIII and his wife Louise, were Prime Minister Jens Christian Christensen and Transport Minister Svend Høgsbro . After the train was crossed with a special ferry to Nyborg, the two SFJ locomotives 14 and 15 (later DSB IF ) brought the special train from Nyborg via rings to Fruens Bøge.

The train consisted of SFJ 14 + 15 + E-Wagen (luggage wagon) + SFJ A 9 as well as the royal wagons, which consisted of the king's carriage, a carriage for the companions and a luggage carriage. In Fruens Bøge the two locomotives ONFJ No. 25 and 26 took over the official opening train.

From 1927 the SFJ had repeated financial problems. If profits were made in the beginning, the economic situation of society deteriorated dramatically in the 1930s.

The route quickly brought in losses and SFJ tried unsuccessfully in 1933 to discontinue the route immediately. The Ministry of Transport did not recommend the discontinuation until the next few years. Intensive use during World War II extended survival.

As a result of the problems, the Ministeriet for offentlige Arbejder decided to set up a committee from December 1, 1939 to discuss the future of the SFJ . At the beginning of January 1940 this committee met with the local politicians on Funen, where it was established that they wanted a state takeover of the railway operations.

In the same year Denmark was occupied by German troops. This marked an economic recovery for the route as a result of the very limited competition from buses, cars and trucks. Separately, the committee presented two agreements in autumn 1941. These agreements meant that the state should take over traffic on the Odense – Svendborg route and on the Nyborg –ringen – Faaborg Banen route between April 1, 1946 and April 1, 1949.

In addition, the relationship between SFJ and the private leased lines of ONFJ, the Svendborg – Nyborg (SNB) railway and the Svendborg – Faaborg SFB railway line should be clarified. DSB took over the lease contracts for the three railways on April 1, 1949 after several postponements.

During these talks, operations continued under the restrictions of the lack of coal and gas supplies during the occupation.

A profitability audit in 1947/48 before the state took over the line showed a deficit of a little over 157,000 crowns for the ONFJ .

Takeover by Danske Statsbaner and shutdown

On April 1, 1949, the line was taken over by Danske Statsbaner (DSB).

In contrast to the SFJ's own lines, which were taken over by DSB and thus became state railway lines, the line remained owned by the private Odense – Nørre Broby – Faaborg Jernbane , in which the local communities were involved. DSB signed a five-year lease with OFNJ. In that time, the shareholders should pay for the maintenance. However, since the municipalities did not pay, the line was closed on May 22, 1954.

Train stations

The Dalum stop was run as a ticket sales point (in Danish billetsalgssted ). Skt. Klemens was ½ km west of the village of Stenløse. Since there was already a Stenløse station on Frederikssundbane , the station was named after the church in Stenløse, which was dedicated to St. Clement . The Tuemose stop received a platform made of tamped earth in 1934. From 1941 an old car body was used as a bus shelter. Nørre Broby station had a water tower . Ernebjerg station was downgraded to a stopping place in later years.

The station buildings were designed by the architect Emanuel Monberg . The building in Fangel was dismantled for rebuilding in the museum village Den Fynske Landsby in Odense. The building in Nørre Broby was demolished around 1983.

vehicles

In 1906, the ONFJ procured four steam locomotives with a tender , the ONFJ 23-26, to operate the line . Although they were the company's only locomotives, they were given serial numbers from the system of operational SFJ, in which each number was only assigned once.

To improve the poor operating result, two railcars were purchased for passenger transport on the route: in 1927 the gasoline-mechanically powered ONFJ MB 3 from Scandia A / S in Randers and in 1932 the diesel-electric ONFJ M from Triangel in Odense.
