Elice is an Italian municipality in the immediate vicinity of Castilenti and Città Sant'Angelo and is located in the province of Pescara .

geography

The community has 1673 inhabitants and has a size of 14 km².

The neighboring municipalities are: Atri ( TE ), Castilenti (TE), Città Sant'Angelo , Collecorvino , Penne and Picciano .

history

Thanks to the fertility of the land, the area was already inhabited in the Paleolithic . The name of the village is derived from the holm oaks that once stood in the area. In the 15th century Elice belonged to the municipality of Penne and for a long time to the Castiglione family. The village became known for its ceramic workshops at the end of the 19th century.

Attractions

  • Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo , church in the town center, mentioned in 1084. Was rebuilt in the late 13th century and suffered significant damage in several earthquakes (1802, 1857, 1950).
  • Chiesa di San Rocco , church just outside the town center from the 19th century.

Viticulture

In the municipality of vines are varieties Montepulciano for the DOC - wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grown.
