Picciano is a 7 km² community with 1327 inhabitants near Collecorvino and Elice in the province of Pescara .

history

Picciano is first mentioned in 1049 in the Charter Offersionis . Bernardo , Count von Penne, donated land and buildings for the establishment of a Benedictine abbey on his territory. This is the first evidence of the existence of a settlement called Picciano. There are various legends about the origin of the name Picciano. The city was founded as Piczano by a group of pastors in the early Middle Ages .

The church of Santa Maria del Soccorso in Picciano was built at the beginning of the 19th century. It was built of bricks, the bell tower was not built as planned.

The tradition of folk music in Picciano and the surrounding villages has been preserved to this day. Traditional songs are sung in groups and at celebrations the groups perform their composed works. The museum Museo delle Tradizioni ed Arti Contadine (an ethnographic museum) shows and recalls the life in Picciano of the past centuries.
