Indian Railways designation schemes
At Indian Railways , the vehicles are given a three- letter designation followed by a number. The letters indicate the track width , the type of drive and the use of the vehicle. The number is used to differentiate between the individual series that have the same letter designation. It usually follows with a hyphen after the letter name, which is sometimes omitted or replaced by a space. Likewise, the first two letters are often left out if the context shows which series is meant. In daily use, a WAP-7 often becomes a P7 .
