The Swedish steam locomotives SJ Sigtuna and SJ Birka belonged to a series of locomotives which Statens Järnvägar procured in two copies from Germany in 1873 .

history

The two locomotives were actually built by Borsig in Berlin in 1873 with the construction numbers 3056 and 3057 for the Oberlausitzer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft for their route from Kohlfurt to Falkenberg in Germany. However, they were not delivered there, but sold to Statens Järnvägar, where they were classified under the names Sigtuna and Birka .

They were the first German locomotives at SJ and were stronger than the D series , which was acquired the following year. The wet steam locomotives had outer cylinders and a drive wheel diameter of 1,566 mm and got a new driver's cab and a new boiler in Sweden. They were coupled to a two-axle tender.

Series E (I)

Regardless of manufacturer and year of construction, all SJ locomotives were initially given a name; at that time, each individual locomotive was run as an "own series" . It was not until 1876 that both locomotives were designated as the E series and given the numbers 147 and 148.

With the procurement of the type E (II) passenger and freight locomotive, which began in 1907 , the two machines were listed in the historical documents for the period from the procurement to the change to the De series as E (I) series .

Series De

In 1898, the two locomotives were given a new type designation and were now listed under the De series with the same numbers. De 147 remained in service until 1919 and De 148 until 1920. De 148 was sold for scrapping in the same year, De 147 followed in 1923. It was sold to CO Klings Metallaffär in Arboga / Nyköping .
