The SJ V3 series diesel locomotives were bought by the Swedish State Railways Statens Järnvägar (SJ) in the early 1950s to replace steam locomotives in shunting service in Sweden .

The locomotive largely corresponds to the German type V36 with some specific changes.

history

Shortly after the Second World War, Maschinenfabrik Esslingen received a large order with the series of 50 diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotives with 450 hp Deutz engines . The V36 was used as the basic concept. However, the SJ wanted the relocation of the dummy shaft after the last dome axis , which brought about a deterioration in the driveability with it. This measure should simplify the removal of the gearbox during repairs. From the V3 32 the locomotives had an enlarged driver's cab.

V3 5 was delivered to Sweden as a prototype as early as 1951. The other machines followed in the years 1952 to 1954. A locomotive delivered to Munkedals Järnväg in 1953 was taken over by the SJ in 1965, it was given the number V3 1 .

The V3 was on major stations in Malmö , Gothenburg , in the marshalling yard Hagalund ( Stockholm ) and in Gävle used until the series V4 and V5 took their service. The decommissioning of the locomotives began in 1977; the last V3 37 was taken out of service by the SJ 1981. Some of them have been scrapped.

Emergency locomotives

V3 5, 10–12, 14–16, 18, 19, 24, 26, 28, 29, 35, 38 41–44, 47, 52, 53 and 56 were considered strategic by the Swedish National Railway Authority Banverket from 1977/78 Reserve ( standby locomotives ) kept until 2003 and then partially scrapped or sold.

Preserved copies

Several locomotives still exist today, including the V3 18 , the 2001 and the V3 44 , which were taken over by the Swedish Railway Museum in 2003 . V3 28 came to Landeryd Järnvägsmuseum , the railway museum in Landeryd in the municipality of Hylte , in 2005 . V3 14 went to Bergslagernas Järnvägssällskap in 2003 and has been in Gothenburg since 2006.
