The SJ Ma series were electric locomotives built by Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA) for the Swedish State Railways Statens Järnvägar (SJ) .

history

As freight traffic increased on the northern routes of the country, more locomotives were needed. At the end of the 1940s, the SJ decided to develop the Ma series based on the experience gained with the M series .

The new series received more powerful engines. Due to the technical structure, the appearance of the locomotive, in contrast to the M, could be designed uniformly. In this form, the locomotive could pull heavy trains at 100 km / h and thus became a universal locomotive. The series was the most powerful single locomotive in Sweden.

32 locomotives were built between 1953 and 1957 and between 1959 and 1960. The color of the locomotive body was reddish, with a black stripe running around the bottom and a black roof.

Between 1970 and 1978, the locomotives received a new main switch, new side windows, rearview mirrors and improved headlights. At the same time, the color scheme was changed, the surrounding stripe became dark gray and the locomotive body dark blue like on the Rc locomotives.

After the delivery of the Rc series from 1967, the Ma were only used for freight train service. Later, the stakes for the Ma were reduced so much that SJ 1991 handed the locomotives over to TGOJ Trafik .

TGOJ Ma

As Trafikaktiebolaget Grängesberg-Oxelösunds järnväger (TGOJ) electric locomotives procured whose choice was undergoing construction Ma SJ. In 1953 Ma 401–404 , 1954 Ma 405–407 and 1958 Ma 408 and 409 were procured.

They were almost identical to the SJ locomotives, but had round instead of square engine room windows and were equipped with multiple controls.

TGOJ Ma2

After the locomotives of the Ma series became almost unemployed due to the use of the Rc series , they were sold to TGOJ in 1991, at that time a subsidiary of SJ. To distinguish them from the TGOJ Ma series , they were given the series designation TGOJ Ma2 . The locomotives 788, 789, 825–829, 831–833, 873–877, 879, 880, 882, 958, 959 and 961–967 were taken over.

NR Ma

NetRail AB (NR) acquired the TGOJ Ma2 825 in 2009 and renamed it NR Ma 825 . It was leased to Midcargo in 2010 and 2011 and to CFL Cargo in 2012 . In March 2014 it was damaged by fire and has been serving as a spare parts donor ever since. The TGOJ Ma2 827, which was acquired at the same time and designated NR Ma 827 , was also leased to CFL Cargo in 2015.

The GC Ma 876 was also bought by GreenCargo and rented to CFL Cargo as NR Ma 876 2014/15.

In 2017 all three locomotives were sold to Svensk Tågkraft AB (STAB).

STAB Ma

In 2017 Svensk Tågkraft AB acquired all three locomotives from NetRail AB, including the spare parts dispenser NR Ma 825 . They are registered as STAB Ma with identical company numbers .

GC Ma (I)

TGOJ has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Green Cargo (GC) since 1999. As of January 1, 2011, the independence of TGOJ was abandoned within Green Cargo and integrated into the parent company. All of the TGOJ locomotives were then transferred to GreenCargo.

The series Ma 401–409 built for TGOJ received the new series designation GC Ma (I) . Between 2012 and 2014 all locomotives were given to other companies.

GC Ma (II)

Also in 1999, the following existing locomotives of the TGOJ Ma2 series were transferred to GC: 826, 828, 831–833, 874, 876, 958 and 961–967. The series was named GC Ma (II).

The GC Ma (II) 826 and GC Ma (II) 828 are still available . The numbers 874, 958, 961, 964 and 967 serve as spare parts dispensers.

NTA Ma

The Norwegian company Norsk Transport AS in Notodden took over the locomotives 404 and 407 of the GC Ma (I) series in 2014 . This was followed in 2015 by NTA Ma 406 , which was acquired by GC from the Railway Museum Grängesberg (GBBJ) a year earlier.

Retirement and whereabouts

In the SJ, the Ma 881 was the first to be retired and scrapped in 1972 after an accident on August 4, 1972 with the F 699 in Munktorp-Kolbäck, which resulted in two deaths.

The Ma 830 , which collided with Rc2 1109 in Hinsnoret on June 2, 1980 , with 11 deaths, followed in 1981 and Ma 824 in 1982. After a derailment in Kotjärn, the Ma 878 was retired in 1990 and scrapped in 1991.

Ma2 788 and Ma2 789 were handed over to the Railway Museum Grängesberg in 1996 and Ma2 880 in 1998 . Ma2 829 and Ma2 873 were scrapped in Eskilstuna in 2004 , Ma2 877 followed in 2006, Ma2 875 and Ma2 959 in 2008.

Stambanans Vänner in Norrköping, an ideal society for the preservation of railway vehicles, has taken over a number of vehicles from the GC series over the years:

  • GC Ma (I) : 402 (2013)
  • GC Ma (II) : 832 (2016), 833, 962, 963 and 965 (2013)

GC Ma (I) 401 went to the Railway Museum Grängesberg (GBBJ) in 2012, the 406 followed in 2014. GC Ma (I) 403 was taken over in 2012 by Bergslagernas Järnvägssällskap . Numbers 405 and 409 were taken over by Stockholms Kultursällskap för Ånga och Järnväg (SKÅJ) in 2014 and 408 was acquired by Föreningen Sörmlands Veteranjärnväg (FSVJ) in Oxelösund on December 20, 2012 .

GC Ma (II) 828 was sold to Kalmar Veterantåg in 2012 . In the same year, Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum (SJVM) took over the GC Ma (II) 966 and converted it into the condition of the former SJ Ma 966 .
