The Prussian class G 5.3 was a type 1'Cn2 freight locomotive. It was designed as a twin variant of the G 5.4 , which was designed in a composite design. As with many other Prussian designs, a composite and a twin version were built of the same type. The G 5.3 as well as the G 5.4 were distinguished from the G 5.1 and G 5.2 by a shorter wheelbase and a higher boiler position. The Krauss-Helmholtz steering frame should improve the driving characteristics, especially at higher speeds. A total of 206 G 5.3 vehicles were built between 1903 and 1906 .

In 1923, the Deutsche Reichsbahn planned to redesignate 132 locomotives as 54 169-181, 54 183-193 and 54 601-708. According to the redesignation plan from 1925 , 71 of these rail vehicles were given the road numbers 54 601–671. The locomotives were retired by 1930.

After the First World War , four G 5.3s went to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes , where they were used as the 600 series at the Železnice Kraljevine Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca . In 1933 the Jugoslovenske Državne Železnice had renumbered these locomotives as class 128 (128-001 to 128-004).

During the Second World War , six G 5.3s from Poland as 54 651-654 and 54 657, 658, and two from Yugoslavia as 54 655 and 656, came into the Reichsbahn's inventory. The 54 651 and 654 had been used as armored locomotives in Poland . The 54 656 came back to the JDŽ in 1947.

The vehicles were traveling with a Tender equipped to type pr 3 T 12th
