The vehicles of type S 9 were express locomotives of the Reichseisenbahnen in Alsace-Lorraine .
The locomotives replaced the P 7 class. In contrast to their predecessors, the S 9 machines had larger drive wheels, otherwise the dimensions were the same. The 15 specimens supplied by Henschel had smooth smoke tubes; Grafenstaden delivered the machines with Serve finned tubes.
Later a locomotive was fitted with a superheater on a trial basis ; however, this attempt remained. The other vehicles were equipped with preheaters.
The locomotives received Schlepptender the type 2'2 'T 20th
