The vehicles of the type S 5 were express locomotives of the Reichseisenbahnen in Alsace-Lorraine . The machines initially ran under the designation A 18 .
The vehicles replaced the Alsace-Lorraine S 3 , which no longer met the requirements. The machines were largely identical to the Prussian S 5.1 of the de Glehn type . Due to the De Glehn design with a four-cylinder compound drive and drive on two axles, stiffeners made of cast steel were necessary in the frame, which made access to the internal drive more difficult. The Grafenstaden bogie had an outer frame. In contrast to the Prussian State Railways , the Reichseisenbahn was satisfied with the locomotives, so that from 1902 to 1904 a total of 50 locomotives were purchased from Grafenstaden . In 1913 there was even another delivery of four more S 5. The locomotives were designated as S 3 101–150 from 1906 and as S 5 501–554 from 1912. Two of the locomotives remained in Germany after 1918, the rest were taken out of service by the Réseau ferroviaire d'Alsace-Lorraine (AL) by March 1, 1937.
The locomotives received Schlepptender the type 2'2 'T 18th
