The Alsace-Lorraine G 8.1 was a superheated steam freight locomotive with four driven axles based on the model of the Prussian G 8.1 . There were no design differences to this. The Reichseisenbahnen in Alsace-Lorraine received a total of 137 G 8.1s between 1913 and 1919, eleven of which were built by Henschel and the rest by Grafenstaden .

After the First World War , ten locomotives stayed in Germany and were later given the numbers 55 2946, 3338–3340, 4275–4279 and 4285 from the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Another came to the Reichsbahn in 1935 together with the G 8.1 of the Saar area as 55 5665. After the end of the war, 72 Prussian G 8.1s remained in Alsace-Lorraine and were added to the inventory of AL, the successor to the Reichseisenbahnen. In addition, there were another 138 Prussian G 8.1s from reparation taxes. Some locomotives were passed on to the French Eastern Railway and the Algerian State Railway. The SNCF took over the G 8.1 as the 040-D series. The 040-D-260 was the last G 8.1 in France to be retired in 1966.

The vehicles were equipped with type pr 3 T 16.5 tenders.
