The red-headed macaw ( Ara erythrocephala ), also known as the Jamaican green macaw , is an extinct species of macaw from the island of Jamaica .

description

The red-headed macaw was described by Philip Henry Gosse in 1847 using reports from 1810 and 1842. The first report comes from a Mr. White, owner of the Oxford Estate in Jamaica, who claims to have seen this bird in the mountainous areas of Trelawny Parish and Saint Ann Parish in 1810 . The second report comes from a Reverend Comard from 1842 who claims to have observed two great macaws in the mountains of Saint James Parish . According to Gosse's description, the bird's head was colored red. The neck, shoulder and underside showed a light- and yellow-green color. The larger wing covers and quills were blue. The tail was bright red and blue on the surface. The lower plumage of the wings and the tail was colored intensely orange-yellow.

This macaw species may have been mentioned earlier by Johann Friedrich Gmelin under the name Anadorhynchus caerulens . It was probably exterminated by overhunting.
