history

The private Rheinau port company founded in 1898 was based in the port of Mannheim . In 1899, they procured two double-coupled shunting locomotives from the Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe with the serial numbers 1539 and 1540 for operation on the connecting railways of the port area. Their rail numbers are not exactly known, but are often given in the literature as "1" and "2" . Together with other existing locomotives, they were given the task of handling the steadily increasing freight traffic up to the turn of the century.

In 1901 the engineering company delivered two more B-couplers to the port railway with the serial numbers 1591 and 1592. They were given lane numbers 9 and 10 .

In 1903 the Rheinau-Hafengesellschaft got into economic difficulties, so that its site was taken over by the Grand Duchy of Baden . The Badische Staatsbahn received their vehicles and handling of traffic on May 31, 1903. The locomotive with the factory number 1539 was given track number 339 on the state railway . The other locomotives did not come to the state railway. None of these locomotives are listed in the preliminary re-drawing plan of the Deutsche Reichsbahn from 1923.

Constructive features

The locomotives had good steam generation. This made it possible to carry out the daily shunting work effectively.

The locomotive, which was taken over by the state railway, had a sheet metal frame made of 20 mm thick plates. The water tank was arranged in between. The riveted long shell consisted of two sections and had a smooth outer sleeve. The steam and regulator dome sat on the front boiler section. The standing kettle was placed between the frame cheeks. The inlet pipes were on the outside.

The horizontally arranged two-cylinder wet steam engine works on the second coupling axle. The all control was external and had a lever reversal. The flat slide valves had an external flow.

The leaf springs were arranged above the top edge of the frame. The throw lever brakes acted on the coupling axles on both sides. The sandpit was placed on the rear boiler section. The driving axle was sanded from the front. The coals were arranged in two bins in front of the driver's cab.
