The VIII b , were freight locomotives of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways .

The quadruple-coupled locomotives were originally intended for a predecessor of the Norwegian-Swedish ore railway . The Baden State Railroad was able to acquire the ten locomotives cheaply from the bankruptcy estate and put them into operation from 1892 to 1894. Due to the long overall axle base, they could not be used on the steep and winding routes in the Odenwald and the Black Forest. The machines remained in service for a long time and four locomotives even received a replacement boiler of type IV e . In 1919 three locomotives had to be given to France as reparations . There they were given the company number Est 4700 to 4702. By 1923, however, all locomotives were decommissioned from the Baden State Railways.

Constructive features

The locomotives, built in the British style, had an internal sheet metal frame. The steam dome sat in the middle of the two-section long boiler. The fire box had a smooth ceiling.

The two-cylinder wet steam engine was on the outside with slightly inclined cylinders. The Stephenson control was internal. The drive took place on the third coupling axle.

The first and second axles were sprung by means of overhead leaf springs and balance levers in between. On the two rear axles, the leaf springs with compensation levers were arranged at the bottom. The Westinghouse air brake braked the second and fourth coupled axles. The sandpit sat on the rear sheet metal and sanded the rearmost coupling axle. The arrangement was later changed and the sandpit was placed on the front boiler section and the second coupling axle was now sanded.

The locomotives were equipped with type 2 T 8.2 and 2 T 12 tenders .
