The vehicles of type IV b of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railroad were passenger train locomotives .
The locomotives of this type represented an improvement over the previous type 1B locomotives. Following the general direction of development, the machines had a much larger grate area than the previous versions. This was accompanied by a significant improvement in performance. The larger grate surface was achieved by a steeply inclined rear wall of the fire box.
The vehicles built by Maffei were equipped with long boilers of the longboiler type , external cylinders with internal Stephenson control, an external filling frame and double safety valves of the Ramsbottom type. As with most locomotives in Baden, the suspension was provided by leaf springs and bow-shaped spring hangers over the axles.
With the acquisition of new 2B locomotives, they were pushed out of the passenger train service. Since the locomotives had too low a friction weight, they were converted into tank locomotives with the axle formula 1B1 between 1888 and 1892 . They also received a new boiler.
Before the conversion, the vehicles were equipped with type 2 T 6.75 tenders .
