The genus I e of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways were two-axle tank locomotives that were built by the mechanical engineering company Karlsruhe for use on branch lines and for shunting operations. At the Deutsche Reichsbahn they were included in the numbering plan together with the Baden IB as class 88 75 .

history

Until the 1880s, the Baden State Railways used obsolete machines of all types as shunting locomotives. However, the use of such different and sometimes unsuitable vehicles was uneconomical in the long run. That is why the State Railroad decided to purchase double-coupled tank locomotives for shunting and light branch line operations.

The first delivery series was delivered in 1887 by the mechanical engineering company Karlsruhe. Another five series followed by 1892. The 30 locomotives were used primarily on the stations and routes in the Black Forest. Machines of type I e were stationed in almost all of the railway depots. The locomotives were replaced by the class X b .

25 locomotives were taken over from the Deutsche Reichsbahn. By the end of the 1920s, most of the locomotives were retired. 88 7553 (No. 121) was sold to a construction company in 1930 and found in 1945 on the territory of the Austrian Federal Railroad. In October 1956 it was withdrawn from service.

Constructive features

The locomotives had a sheet metal frame with 20 mm thick plates and a water box between the frame cheeks. The riveted long boiler had two shots. and was arranged relatively high. The regulator dome was on the front and the steam dome with the Meggenhofen safety valves on the rear. A round sandpit was arranged between the domes. The standing kettle protruded between the frame cheeks. The inlet pipes were arranged outside the smoke chamber.

The suspension took place by means of leaf springs which were arranged above the upper edge of the frame.

The two-cylinder wet steam engine was arranged horizontally on the outside. The power transmission took place on the second coupled axle. The Allan controls were also external. The flat slide valves had an external flow.

The coupling wheels were braked on both sides by a Westinghouse air brake.
