The express train locomotives of type S 10 of the Grand Ducal Oldenburg Railway were intended for operation on the Bremen – Oldenburg - Wilhelmshaven route, the most important express train route in Oldenburg . They were among the few vehicles on this line that were not based on the vehicles of the Prussian State Railways , as the maximum specified average axle load of 15 t due to the light superstructure was lower than that of comparable Prussian vehicles.

The three vehicles of this series were built by Hanomag from 1917 and had the 1'C1 '( Prairie ) wheel arrangement , which is rare in Germany . As is customary in Oldenburg, they had a Lentz type valve control . However, the vehicles showed an unfavorable load distribution and an uneven run and often had to struggle with boiler problems. In addition, the incorrect coordination of the radiant and pipe heating surfaces led to leaks in the pipe walls.

The three S 10 vehicles were taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn as class 16 with road numbers 16 001–16 003. They were the only express train locomotives with the 1'C1 'wheel arrangement and therefore got their own class. After the lines had been expanded for 17 t axle load, the failure-prone S 10s were retired in 1926 and replaced by Prussian P 8s , which had been in use in Oldenburg since 1921.

The locomotives were with a Tender respondents to type old 2'2 'T 20 equipped.
