The steam engines of type D IX were obtained from Maffei 1888-1899 for the Bavarian Royal State Railways made. They were used on the route from Reichenhall via Freilassing to Salzburg . After a machine was successfully used on the route to Berchtesgaden , the vehicles were also used on the suburban railways from Augsburg , Munich and Nuremberg .

The various series showed hardly any differences. Only in 1896 were slight changes made to the heating surfaces, dimensions and supplies. In addition to the rigid arrangement of the propulsion units and the impeller set, the arrangement of the cylinders exactly in front of the impeller set had not proven successful. The class D IX locomotives were able to transport 170 t at a speed of 65 km / h on the level route and 95 t at 20 km / h on routes with a 2% gradient .

The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over all vehicles except for one example, which had already been taken out of service by Bavaria . Some copies were retired before 1925, all others followed by 1932.

No copy of the Bavarian D IX has survived.
