The class D XI locomotives were wet steam local railroad locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railways . With a total of 147 units, they were numerically the strongest Bavarian local railroad locomotive type.
history
Between 1895 and 1912 the Royal Bavarian State Railroad procured 131 class D XI locomotives. In addition, it took over eight locomotives from LMKO in 1901 and three from LAG in 1908. Both Krauss and Maffei were involved in the series production with three prototypes each and later with 91 and 45 locomotives. The locomotives were given the operating numbers 1991 to 2050 and 2701 to 2782 on the state railway.
In 1914 the state railroad procured five more machines from Krauss, which were designated as PtL 3/4 according to the new designation scheme . However, they did not differ significantly from the newer machines of the D XI type and were given the numbers 2783-2787.
In addition, three of these locomotives were purchased for the Pfalzbahn as type T 4.II , but these had different dimensions, including a smaller drive and running wheel diameter.
In 1925, the Deutsche Reichsbahn took over all 147 Bavarian vehicles as class 98 4–5 . The D XI received the numbers 98 411–556, the PtL 3/4 the numbers 98 561–568. About half of the locomotives were decommissioned between 1931 and 1933.
Two machines remained in Czechoslovakia and four in Austria after the Second World War . The latter were the 98 500, 514, 546 and 549, which were given the numbers 791.01-04 at the ÖBB . They were retired in 1957.
In 1945 the German Federal Railroad took over 56 copies. The last locomotive, 98 507, was at the Nürnberg Rbf depot. at home and ended in 1960 with its decommissioning the passenger traffic on the "Freystädter Bockel" . The machine was then transferred to Ingolstadt , where it was erected as a memorial in front of the train station in 1968. This only surviving copy of the Bavarian D XI is now looked after by the Apian-Gymnasium Ingolstadt.
A 1:10 scale model of this locomotive was built from 1962 to 1964 in the AW Weiden's training workshop and is now in the Weiden Railway Museum in Upper Palatinate .
technology
These locomotives were among the first to be equipped with a Krauss-Helmholtz steering frame. Some locomotives received a back pressure brake of the Riggenbach type.
The five PtL 3/4 locomotives differ from the previous ones in that they have a longer length over buffers of 9,306 mm, a slightly lower indexed power of 310 PSi and a slightly larger coal supply of 1.8 tons.
LMKO 1 to 11, LAG 62 to 64
The Aktien-Gesellschaft Süddeutsche Elektrical Local Railways procured two locomotives with the serial numbers 3930 and 3931 for the construction of the Murnau-Kohlgrub-Oberammergau (LMKO) local railway from Krauss, which were delivered in August 1899. When it was foreseeable that the electrification of the line would not be completed in time for the Passion Play in 1900, additional locomotives of type D XI were procured from Krauss in two lots (serial numbers 4129 to 4131 and 4260 to 4265). The total of eleven locomotives were given the operating numbers LMKO 1 to 11.
With the bankruptcy of the AG Süddeutsche Elektrical Local Railways in October 1901, the Royal Bavarian State Railroad took over operations between Murnau and Oberammergau. As a result, the locomotives LMKO 4 to 11 were taken over into the inventory of the state railway and were given the operating numbers 2505 to 2512.
The remaining three locomotives came to the Lokalbahn Aktien-Gesellschaft (LAG) in 1904 when they bought the Murnau-Oberammergau route. At the LAG, they were given the road numbers 62 to 64 and, in addition to their main line, were also used on the Murnau - Garmisch-Partenkirchen local line . With the nationalization of the local railway Murnau - Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1908, these three locomotives also became the property of the Royal Bavarian State Railroad and were classified under the generic name PtL 3/4 with the operating numbers 2762 to 2764.
