The class AD steam locomotive of the Württemberg State Railroad was an express locomotive with a 2'B wheel arrangement. It was built by the Esslingen machine works from 1899 . Until then, the railway had used outdated locomotives with a 1'B wheel arrangement.

The vehicles were equipped with a two-cylinder compound engine. The connecting pipe between the two steam domes was striking . 98 machines of this type were built by 1907; They initially had flat slide valves, but piston valves were installed from 1903 onwards.

In 1907 two locomotives were equipped with two-cylinder superheated steam engines on a trial basis. The boiler pressure was reduced to 117.7 N / cm² . Because this resulted in a gain in performance of around 20%, another 17 locomotives of this design were procured by 1909 and designated as the ADh class .

The retirement of both classes began in the early 1920s.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over 24 locomotives of the composite design as class 13.16 with the numbers 13 1601 to 13 1624 as well as 14 locomotives of the superheated steam design as class 13.17 with the numbers 13 1701 to 13 1714. The former were decommissioned by 1928, the latter by 1932.

The locomotives were equipped with wü 2 T 10 and wü 3 T 15.5 tenders .
