The steam locomotives of type K of the Württemberg State Railways were the only six- coupled locomotives built for a German railway . They were designed by Eugen Kittel .

history

The 44 units built by the Esslingen machine factory between 1917 and 1924 were intended for the Geislinger Steige and the Baden Black Forest Railway. Based on good experience with the kkStB 100 in Austria and the maximum axle load of only 16 t on these routes, the decision was made to use a six-coupled locomotive. The first coupling axle could be moved laterally by 20 mm and the last by 45 mm ( Gölsdorf system ), the flanges of the two central axles were weakened by 15 mm. The leading axle was designed as a Bissel frame with a lateral deflection of 95 mm. The machine had a two-axle drive of the de Glehn design , the inner high-pressure cylinders drove the 3rd coupling axle and the outer low-pressure cylinders the 4th coupling axle.

The locomotives turned out to be a successful construction that was very reliable and powerful. It was able to carry a train weighing 1310 t on an incline of five per thousand at 40 km / h. They were very economical in operation on mountainous routes, while they did not work economically on the plains. The Deutsche Reichsbahn , which had taken over all locomotives as class 59 , increased the permissible axle loads on the important main lines, so that the performance of type K could finally also be provided with five-way coupled machines. A further development of the series was therefore omitted.

After the route over the Geislinger Steige was electrified in 1933, the Reichsbahn used the locomotives on the other important freight train routes in Württemberg and Baden. After the beginning of the Second World War, most of the locomotives were delivered to what was then known as the Ostmark and used on the Semmering Railway . From there some copies went to Yugoslavia and Hungary during the war . The vehicles that remained with or returned to the Deutsche Bundesbahn remained in service until 1953.

Most of the 30 copies that remained in Austria after the Second World War were cashed in, two of them went to the Soviet Union and six to the MAV . The remaining four machines formed the ÖBB series 659 , namely 659.06, 23, 29 and 41 , while retaining the serial number . All locomotives in this series were decommissioned by 1957.
