Karl-Ernst Maedel (born September 2, 1919 in Halle (Saale) , † June 5, 2004 in Worms ) was a German non-fiction author.

The thematic focus of Maedel was the railway in the age of the steam locomotive . An avid railroad enthusiast since childhood, he took up a degree in mechanical engineering in 1938 , which he had to abandon when he was called up for military service . In 1955 he fled the GDR to the Federal Republic of Germany . He then worked as an administrative officer in Wanne-Eickel , Oberhausen and Offenbach am Main .

Maedel was known as the author and photographer of numerous popular non-fiction books on the subject of railways, especially about steam locomotives. During his lifetime he published the following titles:
