As a genus XVIII designated Royal Saxon State Railways six-coupled Tender locomotives for express train service . The Deutsche Reichsbahn assigned the locomotives to the 18.0 series in 1925 .

history

After a number of vehicles with four-cylinder engines had already been put into service in Saxony , the XVIII H was a locomotive with a three-cylinder engine based on the Prussian model. Allegedly a Bavarian S 3/6 should have been a model for the XVIII H. It also had a superheated steam engine with simple steam expansion, while the S 3/6 had a compound engine. Between 1917 and 1918 the Sächsische Maschinenfabrik in Chemnitz built ten copies of this series.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn , founded in 1920, took over all ten locomotives and gave them the new operating numbers 18 001–010 in 1925.

The 18 002 was destroyed in World War II; the remaining locomotives came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR. They were based in the Dresden-Altstadt depot . They were decommissioned between 1965 and 1968.

technical features

For the first time, a boiler with a fire box above the frame was used in the XVIII H type. This was made from three shots, with the third shot being slightly conical. The boiler was fed by two steam jet pumps and a Knorr feed pump with a surface preheater. One of the attached injectors was later omitted.

The steam engine was designed as a three-cylinder steam engine with simple steam expansion. Two cylinders were in the usual horizontal position on the outside, the third cylinder was installed at an angle between the frame cheeks. The second coupled axle was driven by all three cylinders. The control of the inner cylinder was derived from the Heusinger control of the outer cylinder via levers and intermediate shafts.

The three coupling axles were firmly mounted in the frame. The front bogie had a side displacement of 38 mm, the trailing Adam's axle one of 60 mm.

The frame was designed as a sheet metal frame with a shoe-on front bar frame.

As a locomotive brake One was Westinghouse - air brakes fitted. The braking took place on one side on all running and coupling axles. Some of the locomotives were later retrofitted to Indusi .

The locomotives were coupled with sä 2'2 T 31 tenders.

commitment

Since the XVIII H was specially designed for low-incline routes and high speeds, these locomotives were almost exclusively stationed in Dresden and from the start came mainly on the Dresden-Leipzig and Dresden-Berlin routes , but also Dresden-Bodenbach and Dresden-Breslau , for use. The nine machines that were still in existence after the Second World War remained at home in Dresden and mainly handled the express train service to Berlin.
