The steam locomotives of type B XI of the Royal Bavarian State Railroad were built between 1895 and 1900 by the Maffei company for use in Bavaria . The first delivery comprised 39 vehicles with two-cylinder wet steam engines, another 100 with two-cylinder compound engines followed by 1900.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over eight machines of the first series with the road numbers 36 701 to 36 708 and 76 of the second series with the numbers 36 751 to 36 826 as class 36.7 .

The locomotives were with Tender senders of types bay 3 T 12, T bay 3 and 14.5 2'2 'T 18 equipped. The vehicles were the first locomotives that were operated with a four-axle tender.
