In 1908 the Royal Württemberg State Railways awarded the Esslingen machine factory an order for a high-performance passenger train- tender locomotive . This superheated steam locomotive, known as the Württemberg T 5 , for use on the Württemberg main and secondary lines was designed with a very long, fixed wheelbase of 4000 mm to give the machine a smooth run. A total of 96 examples of this locomotive had been produced by 1920. Three copies had to be delivered to France in 1919 , the other 93 machines were taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn ; 89 of them were still taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbahn . From 1959 the vehicles began to be taken out of service. The last example was taken out of service in 1963 and kept in Aulendorf as a museum locomotive until 1968. Then this last copy was also scrapped.
The Württemberg T 5 proved itself very well and was even used in individual cases in front of express trains on the Gäubahn between Immendingen and Stuttgart . No locomotive remained.
