The vehicles of type A were express train steam locomotives of the Royal Württemberg State Railways . They were built from 1878 by the Esslingen machine works .

In the mid-1860s, the Württemberg State Railroad returned from the American-influenced 2'B locomotives to the 1B locomotive, because these caused lower costs in terms of acquisition and maintenance. Even 2'B locomotives were converted into 1B locomotives.

Since the locomotives were built over several years, the individual deliveries deviated from each other in details, so the boiler pressure rose from initially 10 bar to 12 bar. The vehicles had a Schlepptender of the type 2 T 10 and fell on by its large steam dome, was located immediately behind the only slightly higher chimney.

In 1925, two locomotives were included in the final redesignation plan of the Reichsbahn as class 34.81 . The 34 8101 was the former train number 336, which was created in 1896 through a conversion from a class Aa locomotive. The 34 8102, former train number 363, on the other hand, was a new building from 1891. Both locomotives were retired in 1925.
