history

Train with two class III locomotives in Ludwigsburg

The Royal Württemberg State Railways gained their first experience with the American class I and class II steam locomotives . In 1846, she ordered a total of 18 locomotives of the better class I steam locomotive design as replicas in an improved version.

Three steam locomotives were delivered by JA Maffei in 1847. The other 15 locomotives were ordered from Emil Keßler . The first six steam locomotives were delivered by his company to the Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe as early as 1846 . In the following two years, the remaining locomotives were manufactured in the Esslingen machine factory , which was newly founded by Emil Keßler . The first steam locomotive manufactured in the Esslingen machine factory was named Esslingen.

After 1849 another 23 locomotives were procured from the Esslingen machine works. This was followed in 1854 by the improved successor class V series .

Explosion of the Besigheim locomotive

On November 6, 1853, the standing boiler of locomotive number 11 Besigheim exploded in Heilbronn. The accident claimed one human life and three seriously injured. The locomotive stood with fresh water and wood on the cleaning pit in front of the locomotive shed. A fault of the locomotive staff was excluded. The four-sided boiler was identified as a constructive weak point. The production of the improved successor series Class V, which had just started, was stopped after only 5 copies. In the following series, only the Crampton boiler with a smooth fire box was used.

In 1858 the class III and class V locomotives were collectively referred to as class C. As its successor series, Class VII was built from 1856 , which was designated as Class D from 1858. Gradually, the old locomotives were converted to standard standing boilers based on the model of Class VII / D, and from 1864 they were called Class D. Class III machines that had not been converted continued to be called Class C.
