July is a German pop-rock - band from casting . It was founded in its current form in 2001 by Eva Briegel , Jonas Pfetzing, Simon Triebel , Andreas Herde and Marcel Römer and emerged from the band Sunnyglade .

Band history

Sunnyglade

At the age of 13, Andreas Herde and Simon Triebel made music together; later Jonas Pfetzing joined them. With the singer Miriam Adameit and the drummer Martin Möller, the band recorded an album in 1998 entitled Pictures of My Mind , which was published in an edition of 500 copies.

Since the beginning of 2000, when Eva Briegel and Marcel Römer joined the band shortly after one another, the band has been playing in their current line-up. As Sunnyglade , she won the Hessian Rock Prize 2000 with her then English-language pieces and achieved second place at the German Pop Prize of the DRMV .

In early 2001, the band signed their first publishing contract with EMI . This was followed by more recordings at the producer Lutz Fahrenkrog-Petersen (the younger brother of Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen ) in Berlin. There the members got to know the bands Kain and Tex , whose German-language music appealed to them. Thereupon they decided to give up Sunnyglade including all songs and to play German-language songs under the name Juli . The band name comes from a song of the same name by Tex.

The beginning of July

The first gig in July followed in June 2002 and convinced the audience and the publisher, but above all the band members themselves. In the same year, producer Michael Gerlach was also won over, whereupon new professional demo recordings were made in October 2002. Due to the positive response from various record companies to this new demo, their music publisher agreed to organize a showcase, which took place on January 16, 2003 at the Oxymoron in Berlin . Three months later, on April 24, 2003, Universal Music organized an unplugged showcase with several artists in front of decision-makers from Universal Europa , for which singer Eva Briegel and guitarist Jonas Pfetzing played four songs on behalf of the band.

The decision about a record deal was presumably made during this gig, to whose invitation the recommendation of an A&R , who saw the band at the showcase on January 16th, contributed. In August 2003, at the Popkomm in Cologne , Eva, Jonas, Simon, Andreas and Marcel signed their first record deal about four years after they had made this their goal . Also in August 2003 they won the Rio Reiser Song Prize with the title Geile Zeit at the Fresenhagen Open Air Festival .

2004–2006: It's July

Her first single, Perfekte Welle , was released at the end of June 2004 and stayed in the German single charts for over half a year (in November 2004 it was at number 2) and achieved gold status . The song became a kind of hymn to the new wave of success in German-language song texts that was emerging in 2004 and gave its name to a number of compilations with German-language pop music ( Perfect Wave - Music from Here ).

The album Es ist Juli , which was released in September 2004, went from zero to number 3 in the German album charts. With over 700,000 units sold, it achieved triple platinum (as of July 2006), and has since climbed to second place and was continuously represented in the top 25 charts for a year.

After participating in the 1 Live radio tour through North Rhine-Westphalia in September 2004, she started her own club tour in October , which took her all over Germany and which was completely sold out. This was followed by a tour as the opening act for Rosenstolz through Germany, Austria and Switzerland .

After the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia in December 2004, most radio stations withdrew the song Perfect Wave from their programs, as they believed the text had acquired an unwanted ambiguity, because lines like This is the perfect wave / this is the perfect day / Just let her carry you / it is best not to think about it or now she is slowly coming towards you / the water hits you in the face / you see your life like a film is talking about waves. The band and their record company Universal Music expressed understanding for the discontinuation of the single.

On February 12, 2005, July achieved first place in the Bundesvision Song Contest for their home state Hesse with the title Geile Zeit . A few days later their actual It-Is-July tour began, which marked the beginning of numerous concerts and festivals at which the band spent a large part of 2005. This included taking part in the Live 8 concert in Berlin , where they played the songs Geile Zeit and Perfekte Welle . During this time three more singles were released ( Rain and Sea , Why and November ). In the video for the song Regen und Meer , the band played a group of hostage takers . This video caused controversy in the media, as some believed it was related to the kidnapping of Hanns Martin Schleyer by the terrorist organization Red Army Fraction . However, the band denied this. The video is about a love affair between the kidnapper and the kidnapped, an "impossible love". This phenomenon is also known as Stockholm Syndrome . The song Stars was selected in 2005 by ZDF as the theme song of the Tour de France .

2006–2007: a new day

From autumn 2005 the band temporarily only attended a few public appointments and retired to Bochum to work on their second studio album. The band consciously tried to make it more mature and calm. During 2006 the band played at several smaller and larger festivals ( Schlossgrabenfest , Donauinselfest , Soundgarden Festival and others). In July 2006, work on the new album was finally completed.

The time up to the release of the album, which was entitled A New Day , was accompanied by a strong media presence. On September 22, 2006, the first single was released, This Life , which entered the German top 5 of the single charts. One day after release of the single, the band performed with the song in the first edition of the ProSieben telecast Schlag den Raab on. The album was finally released on October 13th. It sold 75,000 times internationally in the first week, reaching number 18 in the World United Album Charts and, with over 200,000 pre-orders, already had platinum status on the day of release.

With the Bambi in the national music category , the band received one of their most important awards to date on November 30, 2006, followed by the Eins Live Krone for the best band on December 7, 2006, the largest German radio audience award.

After the second single from the album Wir Zwei was released on December 15, 2006 , the tour for the new album began on January 20, 2007, with some concerts already sold out weeks before or had to be relocated to larger halls. Actually, the next single should be Best and be released in January 2007. Ultimately, however, the decision fell on Torn . On April 22, 2007, July introduced himself and the new single Zerrissen as part of the TV show Life-4-U in the Internet parallel world Second Life . On July 7th 2007, July performed as part of the Hamburg Live Earth Concert.

Together with the US band Dashboard Confessional , July released the single Stolen on July 27, 2007 . Furthermore, the fourth single from Ein neue Tag, the title song Ein neue Tag, appeared on September 21, 2007, which, however, did not match the success of the previous singles. The live DVD A New Day - Live , recorded at two concerts in February / March 2007, was released a week later, on September 28th. The first live album, Ein neue Tag - live , was also released on September 28th . The album reached a passable number 24 in the album charts. In November they continued their Ein neue Tag tour in Germany and played another 14 concerts, this time in smaller towns and halls.

2008: withdrawal from the public

In 2008, the band withdrew almost completely from the public, the band only appeared at the Bergisel in Innsbruck at a fan festival on the opening day of the 2008 European Football Championship . In addition, the band members pursued various projects of their own, for example Simon Triebel wrote the title Was hat die Zeit mit uns made with Udo Lindenberg (which also appeared as a single) as well as several songs for Fräulein Wunder ; Jonas Pfetzing recorded overdub guitars for the Radiopilot debut album and created remixes for Radiopilot and Madsen . Eva Briegel played the title role in the music video Sad Girl by the Berlin musician Sven van Thom .

For the album Rhythms del Mundo - Cubano Alemán , on which well-known German pop songs were accompanied by the sounds of Son Cubano , the band July contributed the song This Life . In December 2008, this version of the song was also released as a single, but could not place in the sales charts.

2009-2011: In Love

According to their official website, July started writing new songs for their third album in late April 2008. However, they left it open how long it would be before the new album was released. In March 2009, Juli were in the studio to work on their new album. They showed some video sequences from their studio on their Myspace page. In summer 2009 the sampler A Tribute to Die Fantastischen Vier was released for the 20th anniversary of the Stuttgart hip-hop band, on which July with the title Er muss raus (a cover version of the Fanta4 title Raus from 1996) was represented.

The new album In Love was officially released on September 17, 2010. On August 27th, the single " Electric Feeling" was released and entered the German single charts at number 12. Before it was released, the title was played by various radio and television stations from the beginning of July 2010. With the single Du liest so schön the band entered the Bundesvision Song Contest again in September 2011 and came in 13th.

In 2011, July appeared in a Sesame Street music video with a modification of their song Electric Feeling (under the title Come out and play ). In summer 2012 the band gave a concert at Expo 2012 in Yeosu ( South Korea ).

2013–2015: island

In September 2013, Juli announced on Facebook that they were working on a new album. On June 23, 2014 the band performed at the Kieler Woche and played two new songs, including the first single Insel , which was only available as a download on September 12, 2014. The songs Jetzt (September 19, 2014) and One Day (September 26, 2014) were also released as downloads in advance. The album Insel was released on October 3, 2014 as a download and on CD and LP . It reached number 10 in the German sales charts and thus the lowest ranking of all July albums to date. In March 2015, the band went on tour through Germany and Luxembourg for the first time since 2011.

2019: comeback

On April 26, 2019, the band released a new single called Fahrrad .

music

The songs of the band are written almost exclusively by the singer and the two guitarists. In most cases, however, you cannot assume that there will be collaborative work, instead each of the three authors will write their own songs, which they will then present to the band in an almost finished state.

Juli do not see themselves as a rock band , but rather describe their style of music as alternative pop . They set high standards for their texts and therefore wanted to appeal to an adult rather than a young audience from the start.

The first three singles ( Perfect Wave , Geile Zeit and Regen und Meer ) climbed to the top of the German airplay charts . Also , this life could repeat this success and the same held for five consecutive weeks at number one. The two successor singles Wir Zwei and Zerrissen also made it into the top 5.

Relationship to other bands

At the time of the first successes in July, a number of other German-speaking bands had their breakthrough. Immediately before July u. a. We are Helden (first published in February 2003) and Silbermond (first published in March 2004) their first successes. The fact that these bands all appeared with a female singer and German lyrics was a topic of conversation from the start.

Even at the beginning of her career, Juli was confronted with such comparisons, which she strictly rejected even then. In particular Silbermond, whose career began as an English-speaking school band, as in July, are often put into competition by the media, which is also viewed as unfounded by both bands.
