Stadtaffe is the debut album by Berlin musician Peter Fox , a member of the dancehall band Seeed . It was released on September 26, 2008 by the music label Downbeat Records. The sound of the album is dominated by string and percussion instruments . Fox's lyrics are mostly about his own reflection and life in his hometown.

Stadtaffe proved to be a success both commercially and artistically. The album reached number one in the German and Austrian charts, a total of three singles were represented in the top 10 and were also successful in other European countries. Most of the critics praised Stadtaffe enthusiastically, leading media analyzed the album in detail, especially in terms of content.

Due to the unexpectedly high level of attention that Stadtaffe and thus himself received, Fox announced in July 2009 that it would probably not publish another solo album.

Emergence

Peter Fox at an appearance, 2009

Peter Fox had originally planned to produce an album for another artist during the hiatus Seeed took in late 2007. His partner of choice, Cee-Lo Green , who already worked on the Seeed single Aufstehn! participated, but was no longer available due to the unexpected success with Gnarls Barkley . Other singers did not satisfy Fox, so he recorded an album of his own "out of necessity" together with the producer duo The Krauts, consisting of DJ Illvibe and David "Monk" Conen . His aim was " to make a pop record in German that is cool in all respects" and "would not have been possible in the Seeed context". For this he worked with the 40-strong Babelsberg film orchestra . Its musical implementation was based on the melodies of the three producers noted in the score by the arranger Gunter Papperitz - "also hundreds of old records" served as inspiration - and built on Fox 'previously produced beats in a three-week session in Avignon ( France ) with two drummers on. Peter Fox wrote the lyrics together with his friend and producer Daffy alias David Conen mostly after the music for the respective piece had already been produced - however, not in a linear sequence, but sometimes mixed up. Fox and Conen ended many of the texts in a beer garden or on a wall of the Landwehr Canal on Paul-Lincke-Ufer .

After work on the album had already started in October 2006, the piece Fieber , a collaboration with the Berlin hip-hop group KIZ , was available as a download since November 2007 . At the time, Stadtaffe was scheduled to be released in early 2008. Fox took on the production costs of 150,000 to 170,000 euros himself, and after a year of working in the recording studio he finally sold the finished product to his record company Warner . Two weeks before the album was released in September 2008, the working title was "Dogs, Pigeons and City Monkeys" . This would have resulted from the topics addressed on the album.

Mixed was Stadtaffe largely Olsen Olic and Peter Fox and Peter Schmidt; the mastering was done by Sascha "Busy" Bühren, who also worked with Silbermond and Curse , among others .

Monkey motif

The monkey motif chosen by Peter Fox for the album can be found in all aspects of the work. The song Stadtaffe describes a “city full of monkeys” . This was first realized optically in videos shot for MTV for promotional purposes, later in the artwork of the album and in the music videos for the pieces Alles neu und Schwarz zu blau . Some of Fox's fellow musicians also occasionally wore monkey masks during public appearances. He received a prize at the Comet Awards 2009 by video message, also wearing a mask and monkey-like gestures .

Peter Fox uses the term “city monkey” to refer to people his age who are “no longer teenagers , but still more young than old” and who “often behave quite foolishly”. This “monkey” behavior manifests itself in the contradictory nature of their actions: city monkeys are “people who are annoyed by noise but make noise themselves. People who are annoyed by the dirt and who throw things on the street themselves. ”Because of his affinity for Berlin, he describes himself as a“ big city monkey ”.

layout

The Kottbusser Tor can be seen on the cover of Stadtaffe .

The Berlin design company Gestalten took over the visual concept of Stadtaffe and its design. Their stated goal was to “create an emotional and authentic artwork that evokes the spirit of Berlin” (“create an emotional and authentic artwork that breeds the spirit of Berlin”). To do this, she worked with the photographers Erik Weiss and Felix Broede, who took the pictures in the booklet . This is almost entirely black and white in connection with neon green tones and shows the musician in his hometown.

On the cover is Peter Fox in the middle in business clothes. To the right of him is an antenna mast ; on the left you can see the Kottbusser Tor , near which he lives. Fox describes the prevailing climate as "pretty bitter". The "Kotti" also appears in the song Black To Blue .

music

Musically, Stadtaffe is based on a concept that differentiates the album, if not dogmatically , from the sound of the Seeed albums, but also from the musical mainstream . Peter Fox mixes characteristics of hip-hop, dancehall and classical music , he himself simply categorizes the music as pop . A highlighted rhythm is combined on the album with orchestral instrumentation , which is mostly used rather discreetly. Fox's own description of the sound as "film music to dance to" has been widely picked up by the press.

“ I had the idea of combining rickety drums with an orchestra in my head for a long time. The whole thing should be danceable in the broadest sense and have that slightly cinematic touch . I wanted to make club music, but without the usual club sounds with synths , because everything has already been said on the subject. For me as a producer, it is also part of the fact that you close your eyes, look into yourself and think about where there might still be one or the other white spot on the sound-technical map that doesn't already contain a thousand other flags. "

Fox composed the music together with The Krauts, Ruth-Maria Renner alias Miss Platnum and Grace Risch also worked on some pieces . In addition to the drums and brass and string instruments of the Babelsberg film orchestra, keyboards , guitars , a trombone and a trumpet were used for the recordings . Peter Fox played some of the instruments himself. The string arrangement of the song Alles neu comes from the 4th movement of the 7th symphony by the Russian composer Dmitri Dmitrijewitsch Schostakowitsch . For the song Shake Your Speck , the producers sampled an excerpt from the song Temptation, written by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed , in the version of the blues singer Screamin 'Jay Hawkins . The horn section of the piece comes from Oliver Oltersdorf, Patrick Braun, Simon Harrer, Iven Hausmann, Nikolaus Neuser, Jörg Huke and Martin Gerwig.

Poetry

Texts

Fox gave the lyrics a high priority when working on Stadtaffe , because he wanted to hide what he believed to be average singing qualities. In addition, he saw the lyrics, in the absence of a captivating voice, the only way to generate emotions in the listener. His goal was that "the texts flow well, are appealing in terms of content and rhymed appropriately [...], but still pleasantly simple [are]". The fact that most of the pieces are rather short is also due to their textual orientation, which should not bore the listener. In terms of content, most of the pieces were aimed at an audience of Fox's age. Compared to his early days at Seeed, Peter Fox sees a clearly positive development in the texts on Stadtaffe . Writing with Conen, however, took "forever".

Many of the pieces deal with Peter Fox's hometown Berlin, but basically any larger city could be meant. This happens particularly clearly in black on blue : In the play, the protagonist describes his observations on the way home after a night of partying and above all shows the negative sides of Berlin. People behave badly and stay to themselves, and the city is dirty and unsightly (“You can't even see it from afar”). This is particularly bad for children. However, he needs the city “to breathe”, whether he like it or not.

Another important element that Fox processes on Stadtaffe is self-reflection . In Alles neu he describes a “process of shedding” that drives him to keep trying new things and not to stick to old, bad habits. For example, he never wants to lie or smoke weed again . The motif of being driven can also be found in lost head and locomotive on two legs . In the latter song, the protagonist describes his inner urge to always have to be on the move and to accomplish new deeds instead of just looking after himself ( “The wheel has to turn, so I turn the wheel” ).

The opposite is Haus am See : the play describes a sedentary life in a family idyll that the protagonist longs for ( “I have 20 children, my wife is beautiful / everyone comes over, I never need to go out” ).

The song The Second Face describes the struggle between good and evil that takes place in every human being. Evil always breaks out, even if it is suppressed throughout life (“from the playpen to the grave”) .

Ich Steine, Du Steine is the only ballad on the album. Fox sings about a doomed relationship in which the protagonist cannot get along without the person in question, but neither with her.

Fever can be interpreted as a piece against global warming . It describes a scenario of unbearable heat in Berlin. The line "We gambled it, screwed it up, the doctor is late" indicates that the people are complicit.

In addition to profound pieces, there are also some songs on Stadtaffe that are exclusively about partying. Less superficially, Fox describes in The Last Day the pleasure that lies in a relationship when you live it as if each day were the last.

The last piece of sugar is a duet between Peter Fox and Vanessa Mason , in which the man tries to conquer the woman. After the woman initially has the upper hand, towards the end both fall back into their traditional gender roles . It was the only song on the album that was criticized by Spiegel Online and referred to as “prepubescent embarrassing pick-up smack”.

articulation

The rhyme schemes for Stadtaffe are sometimes very complex. Peter Fox's claim was to rhyme "at the very highest rap level", but without reproducing the typical content. It is important to him that the lyrics have a "musical-rhythmic flow". The rhymes are mostly impure , but often created assonant , for example in black to blue :

" And there is shit everywhere, you actually have to float.
Everyone has a dog but no one to talk to.
I breathe through my mouth all the time, that's part of my life
I feel unhealthy, I need something pure against it "

Furthermore, he uses the rhetorical means of alliteration ( “I build beautiful speaker towers , basses massage your soul” , “My pear is on fire ) as well as personifications and numerous metaphors .

In his lecture manner Fox means both used singing and the chanting in the form of rap and toasting . As background singers are on Stadtaffe J-Luv , Miss Platnum , Grace, Fetsum and Celina Bostic heard.

Stadtaffe proved to be very successful in the German album charts . The album debuted at number 4 in the 42nd calendar week of 2008 and finally reached the top position after more than four months. Only after exactly one year did it say goodbye to the "Top Twenty" for the time being. In the German annual charts for 2009, the sound carrier took first place. So far it has sold over 1.3 million times in Germany (as of July 2016), making it one of the best-selling albums in this country .

The sales figures were also high in German-speaking countries: In Austria, Stadtaffe also took first place and sold over 40,000 times; In the Swiss charts, the work rose to fourth place after spending more than a year, and 15,000 albums were sold. It also made it into the charts in the Netherlands (10th) and Flemish Belgium (13th).

In 2009 Stadtaffe was the most successful music album in Germany in terms of sales.

Reviews

Stadtaffe was received very positively by most of the critics. Mostly Peter Fox's intelligent lyrics and innovative musical accompaniment were praised. Two years after it was first published, Rolling Stone put the work in the canon of the best German albums; it was ranked 18th.

The author Alexander Cordas of the e-zine laut.de saw “not a single failure” among the twelve tracks and gave the album four out of five possible points. He praised the “sophisticated production” that runs through the album and, despite the use of the orchestra, never slips into bombast. He particularly emphasized the piece Schwarz zu blau, whose "apocalyptic strings [...] were perfectly flanked by the text". The song Haus am See offers “the relaxed, casual contrast”, while the song Stadtaffe represents a “rhythm bomb”.

In his review of 1 Live, Christian Möller clearly distinguished Peter Fox's solo work from his dancehall-oriented albums with Seeed. The sound of the album suggests “classic cinema scenarios”, and “the lyrics” are also convincing.

Stadtaffe was rated eight out of ten possible points by the music portal CDSTARTS.de . The responsible author Albert Ranner described Fox's decision to pursue a solo career as "spot on", but saw in the first song, which was also the first single, Everything new had already reached the climax of the album. Through the use of the Babelsberg Film Orchestra would gain the remaining pieces of "conciseness and depth" - best implemented in the atmosphere to the film noir reminiscent Halves - but they did not come "to the rousing beat Inferno" from Everything new approach. Rather than the music, the boundaries to Fox's work with Seeed would be defined by his "mostly thoughtful and dark" lyrics, which Ranner judged to be "high quality". In addition to everything new and the second face , he highlighted the songs Stadtaffe and Zucker ; Me stones, you stones , on the other hand, “received a whole load of symphonic pathos ”. Apart from the piece, Stadtaffe is growing "with every minute".

Larger publications also took up the album, especially on the textual level, and put it in a pan-German context. The journalist Ingo Scheel from stern.de, for example, saw the reason for Stadtaffe's success in the “city lyric”, “which is heard and, above all, understood by all audiences from 15 to 50”. The texts are "not in the least as chunky as the usual suspects", but also audible in the "smoking area of the comprehensive school ". This bond with the hometown, whether in a positive or negative sense, is not only to be found in “the German hip-hop culture of the last ten years”, but also characteristic of German rock “of the last three decades”; Scheel named Herbert Grönemeyer ( Bochum ), Campino ( Düsseldorf ) and BAP ( Cologne ) as examples . Thanks to its cross-generational acceptance based on text, Fox has become the first German “superstar of the millennium ”. Also on stern.de, Hannes Roß certified the Berliner "as apt and light-footed as no other German musician has for a long time brought the psyche of German city dwellers to the point". Consequently, at the end of 2009 , the star named Peter Fox one of the winners of the year.

For the Spiegel Online portal, Tobias Rapp certified Peter Fox with his music "[to] have hit a nerve" in Germany. He compared the CD Stadtaffe with the also very successful works Nothing happens by Silbermond and Dis where I come from by Samy Deluxe in their inherent ambition to make "political statements on the current situation in their own way". In doing so, they reflected in different ways the mood in society during the financial crisis . The "Kreuzberg impressions" conveyed by Peter Fox to Stadtaffe are "prototypical for German city life" - "bourgeois fantasies (house on the lake) , [...] urban hectic (locomotive on two legs) and general chaos (lost head) " - and mainly appeal to the middle class . Rapp described an “astonishing” thing the three albums had in common that they always remained “reasonable” and “moderate” in their approaches to anger and did not succumb to the “ populist temptation”.

Peter E. Müller also went into the representativeness of the description of life in Berlin on Stadtaffe for Die Welt Online :

“Up to now, hardly anyone has summed up the lifestyle of the bustling city dwellers so well. This swarming between being lost and hedonism , this indulging in love of life and a feeling of departure. This downright aggressive approach to interpersonal relationships, which then leads to a romantic token of love. Peter Fox is a stroke of luck in German pop. "

The author Hannah Schneider emphasized in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger the genre and cross-generational breadth of Stadtaffe's audience , which can be seen at his concerts. The reason for this lies in the identifying texts of the Berliner. The album made Fox a “family entertainer”, especially children unexpectedly advanced to become fans of his music and transferred their musical taste to their parents.

Awards

After its release, the album won several awards. In December 2008, Stadtaffe received the 1 Live Crown for Best Album , and in the following year Peter Fox was voted Best Live Act . With a total of four nominations, the Berliner won three Echos in February 2009 in the categories Hip-Hop / Urban , Most Successful Producer / National - together with his production team The Krauts, consisting of David Conen and Vincent von Schlippenbach - and National Critics' Prize . In March 2010 there was another echo for the album of the year National / International .

Fox won the Comet , which was awarded in May 2009, twice with four nominations: During the live broadcast, viewers voted the music video of the single Alles neu as the best video , and the other nominated artists named it the star of the stars .

At the MTV Europe Music Awards 2009 , which took place in November of the same year , Peter Fox was nominated in the category Best German Act , but could not prevail against Silbermond.

Also in November 2009, Fox was announced as the winner of the European Border Breakers Awards . This is awarded to European artists who are releasing an album abroad for the first time and have particularly high sales figures, a long time on the radio and successful live performances. According to the EU , Stadtaffe was the most successful debut of the year. The prize was awarded on January 14, 2010.

Adaptations

Individual pieces from Stadtaffe were later adapted by other musicians. The British rapper Plan B sampled the string arrangement of the piece Alles neu for his song Ill Manors from 2012. The German pop singer Heino covered the song Haus am See for his album Mit freundlichen Grüßen .

tour

Peter Fox's first solo tour began at the end of November 2008. After almost all concerts were sold out after a short time, it was extended to February and March 2009. On some of these dates the singer Oceana accompanied the musician as a supporting act . He was supported as background singers by Monk, Miss Platnum , J-Luv and on some appearances Vanessa Mason , who also sang Zucker as a duet partner of Fox; Miss Platnum and J-Luv also performed some solo pieces. At his fourth concert in Berlin's Wuhlheide on August 26, the American rapper Asher Roth performed in front of Peter Fox, and he made two further appearances with the British soul and blues musician James Hunter . In addition to Germany, the tour also took him to Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland. During his appearances , Fox covered and sampled pieces by Led Zeppelin ( Kashmir ), Timbaland (Give It to Me) , Erykah Badu (The Healer) and Panjabi MC (Mundian to bach ke) . The concerts were well received in the press.

Between May and September 2009 the musician played what he called the city monkey festival season . He appeared at Rock im Park and Rock am Ring as well as at OpenAir St. Gallen , MTV HipHopOpen Minded and Chiemsee Reggae Summer . Peter Fox gave his last solo concert on September 4th, 2009 in Hamburg.

The performance and music of the concerts were decisively shaped by the drumline Cold Steel from North Carolina , which accompanied him throughout the tour and was explicitly praised by the press. On November 27, 2009, Fox and Cold Steel released one of four concerts that he gave in June and August on the Kindl stage in Wuhlheide in front of 17,000 spectators under the title Live from Berlin on DVD and as a CD-DVD bundle . Despite a public request to Led Zeppelin, Kashmir (as well as Give It to Me ) was not among the titles on it due to copyright reasons. On December 5, 2009 Das Erste showed the concert in abbreviated form on television for the first time, further broadcasts on rbb television and on 3sat followed.
