Live and act

Brown moved with his family to Los Angeles as a child and attended Manual Arts High School. After finishing school, he worked full-time as a salesman or real estate agent, but was already composing his own pieces. In the early 1920s he celebrated his first successes with his songs Coral Sea and When Buddha Smiles . In 1927 he joined the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and in 1928, at the beginning of the sound film era, he got a job as a composer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Hollywood , thus turning his musical passion into a profession. At MGM he often worked with the lyricist Arthur Freed , including The Pagan (1929), for which they wrote Pagan Love Song , and the well-known film musical Singin 'in the Rain . His most successful songs, some of which have become part of the Great American Songbook , include Singin 'in the Rain itself, You Are My Lucky Star , You Were Meant for Me , Temptation , All I Do Is Dream of You , Make' em Laugh and Good morning . Brown retired in 1950 and died in San Francisco in 1964. In 1970 he was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame .
