Open Air St. Gallen

Sitter stage

The Open Air St. Gallen is one of the oldest and largest open-air - music festival of Switzerland . It takes place annually on the last weekend in June in the Sittertobel in St. Gallen and is the only one of the major Swiss festivals that has taken place without interruption since it was founded in 1977.

history

facts and figures

The founder of the St. Gallen Open Air Festival, Freddy “Gagi” Geiger and his colleagues wanted to do something for the “young culture” on the one hand in 1977 and on the other hand to enable the audience to enjoy a community experience on a beautiful site that not only focused on music and limited to the space in front of the stage. When camping in the tent city, there should be an opportunity for “deepening, discussion, and getting to know each other”. The location of the first festival was an area on the Ätschberg in Abtwil .

In the years 1995 to 2000 the festival struggled with liquidity problems and in 1999 was threatened with bankruptcy due to accrued entertainment tax and supplier claims of several hundred thousand francs. However, the city of St. Gallen deferred taxes and suppliers waived part of the outstanding claims. The festival has been organized by OpenAir St.Gallen AG since 2007. Together with SummerDays Festival AG and OpenAir Office GmbH, this belongs to e-maxx holding. In 2015, the e-maxx Holding AG, which had existed since 2002, was renamed “wepromote Entertainment Group Switzerland AG”. Under this umbrella brand, five important companies from the Swiss music business have come together in a holding structure with mutual holdings in order to gain more negotiating weight when booking artists to reach.

In 2008 the Open Air St. Gallen was voted the fifth most popular open air in Europe by the largest British festival platform. St. Gallen is the Swiss equivalent of Glastonbury .

In 2012, the Open Air St. Gallen was the second largest open air in German-speaking Switzerland with 110,000 entries, behind Frauenfeld (145,000) and ahead of Gampel (85,000).

First years in Abtwil

The first open air took place in 1977 on the Ätschberg near Abtwil . Entry cost 15-18 francs back then. 2,048 visitors came to the festival with the 13 Swiss bands. Because of the bad weather and because the stage had sunk into the wet ground, the festival had to be canceled on Sunday morning. On Saturday evening, the stage technology failed before 9 p.m. Toni Vescoli saved the evening with an unplugged concert and in the presence of Alexis Korner , who had spontaneously accompanied Vescoli to his performance and was able to play through his battery-powered case amplifier.

In 1978 the Open Air took place on a new site, the "Rüti" near Abtwil. The new area offered more space, but again the rain thwarted the organizers and spectators and the festival had to be terminated early, as in the previous year.

In 1979 the festival was able to go through with a full program for the first time despite the rain. For the first time foreign bands took part and the program became wider (from folk to free jazz ).

In 1980 the Open Air took place for the fourth and last time in Abtwil with 8,200 spectators. The rain and the "mud battles" caused by it slowly became legendary. An international top star appeared for the first time: Joan Baez honored the festival. Despite the youth riots that took place in Bern and Zurich this year , the festival was peaceful.

New event location Sittertobel

In 1981 , when the Open Air took place for the first time in Sittertobel near St. Gallen, it was not raining for the first time. Around 10,000 visitors visited the festival and camped on the meadow on the banks of the Sitter .

In 1982 the typical stage roof was built for the first time, and it has remained the festival's landmark to this day. Around 14,000 people attended the festival. The performance by Crosby Stills & Nash in 1983 was one of the most remarkable - and the most expensive act in the history of the St. Gallen Open Air, at CHF 250,000. 18,000 people found their way to Sittertobel.

In 1984 , the number of viewers fell to 13,700 despite the top act Whitesnake ( Lord , Paice & Coverdale ).

New organizational team and new strategy

In 1985 the organizing committee and the strategy of the open air changed. Only six international bands were invited - but absolute top acts. The audience numbers rose to 23,500.

As a "birthday present" for the tenth time was in the summer of 1986 for the first time Musig uf de Gass a free summer music festival in the streets of the city of St. Gallen - - instead. For the first time, the festival program started on Friday evening. A new attendance record was achieved: 29,500 people attended the festival.

In 1987 the organizers returned to the 2-day program. The number of viewers fell to 15,000.

In 1988 the number of visitors returned to its high level. The acts, some of which are more famous today than they were then, put on great concerts.

The 1989 Open Air hit the headlines when Grönemeyer and the program manager yelled at each other on stage in front of the audience.

Development with ups and downs: 1990–2000

The 1990 Open Air was a record year: With 31,272 visitors, the festival was completely sold out. The Sittertobel sank in the mud and the organizers considered canceling the event.

In 1991 a photo exhibition was held for the first time in the run-up to the festival and a sponsorship award was awarded. For the first time, the number of spectators had to be limited: Because of the land damage in the previous year, only 25,000 visitors per day were allowed to the festival site in Sittertobel. Despite the “only” 23,000 spectators, the Sittertobel sank into the mud again.

The 1992 Open Air was characterized by admission prices that rose above 70 francs for the first time. During the Van Morrison concert , traffic on the bridge over the Sittertobel was still.

In 1993 the entire program was expanded. In addition to the concerts, there was an animation program for children, a food village where wine and beer were served, and a bazaar area for the trade stalls. The showers were also new. A movie was shown on Friday night. The deficit was CHF 100,000.

In 1994 the second stage was added for the first time. On the side stage, 17 bands from the region got the chance to play in front of an audience. The top acts of Swiss and international rock music played on the main stage. The entry price (for three days) rose to over 100 francs for the first time. After serious injuries in previous years, the use of glass was prohibited on the entire site for the first time.

In 1995 the access regime was simplified. Tickets and wristbands were issued for the first time at the parking lot in Breitfeld or at the main train station. In this way, the queues at the main entrance to the festival site could be reduced. The side stage has since been called “Heubühne” and, in addition to special musical features, comedy acts also performed there for the first time.

For the 20th anniversary in 1996 , a competition to design the festival poster was announced.

In 1997 the Open Air was completely sold out at the end of May. Three acts canceled: Neil Young for injury, Midnight Oil for studio recording, and the Wu Tang Clan for getting stuck in New York. The last Swiss appearance of INXS before Michael Hutchence's death was a great success.

The 22nd edition of the Open Air St. Gallen took place in 1998 under the motto "True Love". The highlight of the festival was the appearance of Ozzy Osbourne .

In 1999 the most expensive band that has ever performed at the open air played: Metallica . Nevertheless, the festival was not sold out and ran a high deficit.

The Open Air in 2000 was attended on average and, due to financial losses, had to rely on the generosity of the city and canton of St. Gallen and its suppliers.

Quiet years: 2001–2009

For the 25th anniversary in 2001 , the festival was in the black for the first time in a long time. The highlight was the two and a half hour concert by Wyclef Jean , who hardly wanted to part with his audience and thus messed up the entire program.

In 2002 the number of visitors rose again to 30,000 people per day.

In 2003 , around 90,000 people visited the open air over three days. 3000 helpers and 37 bands from twelve different countries took part.

The open air in 2004 was comparatively calm. Despite the pleasant weather, it was not sold out with 24,000 visitors a day. The festival organizers had the 72,000 tickets sold over the three days, however, with a balanced bill.

The 2005 festival was sold out a week in advance. 30,000 visitors per day, 3,000 helpers and 38 bands enjoyed themselves without incident in the Sittertobel with ideal, albeit rainy, festival weather at the beginning. Despite the Live8 concerts taking place all over the world at the same time , REM have found their way to St. Gallen as headliners. The new depot concept on cups and PET did not prove itself; the amount of waste remained the same.

In 2006 the 30th anniversary of the Open Air St. Gallen was celebrated. With 84,000 visitors in three days, the festival was not sold out.

Extension to four days - night owl ticket from 2007

Night owl tickets were sold for the first time at the 2007 festival . This allowed 6,000 visitors to enter the site on Thursday evening, while the other 24,000 were only allowed onto the site on Friday. Thus the number of visitors rose from 90,000 to 96,000 daily admissions over four days. Art Brut and the Swiss band Lunik stepped in for Bright Eyes and Mika , who canceled at short notice .

The 32nd edition of the 2008 festival was able to lure visitors to the Sittertobel on the festival Sunday, despite the EM final. With 93,000 daily admissions (Thursday, night owls 6,000, then Friday to Sunday 29,000 each), the record from the previous year was practically maintained. The entrance concept to the festival has been revised. The visitors are now already directed to the right side of the street in front of the legendary festival bridge; the high sidewalk was tarred for this purpose. With this innovation, the situation at the stage access has eased massively. Not a drop of rain fell over the entire four days of the festival. For health reasons, the German reggae musician Gentleman had to cancel his concert in Sittertobel, and the Grisons rappers Breitbild took his place at the end of the festival.

In the reporting of the international music media, the line-up of the 2009 edition and the festival as a whole come off very well. The music magazine Clash writes:

"It's the perfect way to finish the festival and a reminder that not only is St Gallen Open Air offering loads of things other events do not, it also has a line up combining the best of many worlds."

"The Open Air St. Gallen offers a lot that other festivals don't do and on top of that has a line-up that combines the best of many worlds."

Big changes: since 2010

2010 was the festival of big changes: the mixer in front of the stage was moved back to give the audience more space in front of the stage. This change was extremely well received by the visitors. The larger stage also creates a positive atmosphere. Another innovation concerned the regulation of night owls. For the first time, the number of available tickets for site access on Thursday was not limited. In previous years the maximum limit was 5000 or 6000 tickets. This innovation meant that 10,000 people were able to enter the premises on Thursday evening. One innovation that was not well received was the 3-liter beverage limit. This allowed the visitors to bring only drinks with a maximum volume of three liters onto the premises. According to the organizers, the reason for this innovation was the huge amount of PET beverage bottles that were not loaded into the depot and were therefore not properly disposed of. At the Open Air 2009, over 200,000 units were distributed on the site, which prompted the organizers to make this change. In order to make this import restriction for drinks more bearable for the visitors, the organizers introduced a HomeDeliveryService in return, which delivered beer and mineral water to the site at reasonable prices.

In contrast to previous years, the 2010 edition was not sold out for the first time in four years. During the four days, a total of 82,000 day tickets were sold (10,000 for Thursday and 24,000 each for Friday / Saturday / Sunday). The fact that this edition was not sold out despite the midsummer weather caused some skepticism in the media.

In 2011 the organizers were able to announce a sold out festival with 105,000 daily admissions (Thursday 15,000, Friday to Sunday 30,000 visitors each) and were impressed by the great atmosphere among the visitors. The big changes of the previous year seemed to be paying off, after they had led to rather modest visitor numbers in 2010. Except for a few rainfalls on Friday, the 2011 edition was mainly characterized by good weather. The police hardly reported any major incidents. During the course of Sunday a headliner for the 2012 edition was announced: Die Toten Hosen . With this announcement, the advance booking started so early for the first time. For a short period of time, the tickets were available at a discounted price.

The 2012 edition was a festival of superlatives: The pre-sales figures reached record levels at the beginning of April 2012 and the organizers were able to announce the sale in May 2012. The last time the festival was sold out this early was in 1996. More visitors than ever before came to Sittertobel on Thursday evening. A total of 110,000 daily admissions were sold (Thursday 20,000, Friday to Sunday 30,000 visitors each). The atmosphere was exuberant and peaceful and the concerts were convincing throughout. Despite the great heat, hardly any major incidents were reported. However, the hot weather made you thirsty: 167,800 liters of beer and 92,500 liters of mineral water were sold. At the end of the 2012 edition, the band Mumford & Sons spontaneously brought the band members of The Kooks , Wolfmother and Paolo Nutini onto the sitter stage on Sunday evening after their concert and played the song “The Weight” by The Band with them . The Swiss radio SRF 3 reported:

“It was completely sold out for a long time for a reason. The Open Air St. Gallen 2012 promised big things, lured with a line-up of the extra class and then turned out to be a total stroke of luck among the festivals. From Vikings to elf-like singers to dead pants: everything was on site at Sittertobel. And the phenomenal finale with the Mumfords & Sons, The Kooks, Wolfmother and Paolo Nutini was symptomatic of the Open Air St. Gallen - it was something that doesn't exist anywhere else. "

The following year, the organizers were able to announce in mid-February that all tickets were sold out. The Thursday program was convincing, which again led to the fact that more than 20,000 people streamed onto the festival site on Thursday in 2013 . On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the site capacity was exhausted with 30,000 people per day. This means that a total of 110,000 day tickets were sold. Despite the announced opening of the premises on Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m., the waiting room at the east entrance was already completely full at 6:00 a.m., while the west entrance was already three-quarters full at this time. Due to this large crowd, the organizers announced during the festival that they would analyze the situation in and around the waiting rooms for next year's edition and, if necessary, make changes to the admission procedure.

An important innovation was the expansion of the cashless system to the entire festival area, after the system had already been tested in the VIP area last year. The chip integrated in the entry wristband was used on the one hand for access control and on the other hand for cashless payment on the festival site. The visitors had the opportunity to charge the chip in advance or, alternatively, to use the charging stations distributed around the site. The criticism expressed in advance quickly fell silent after the system was successfully implemented and worked almost perfectly. Big problems like those at the Gurtenfestival did not materialize and at the beginning of the festival the organizers only had to fix minor difficulties with access control with a server update.

The 2013 edition was dominated by adverse weather conditions that had turned the site into a mud bath. The organizers tried to minimize the lakes in the area caused by permanent precipitation by pumping out mud. More than 10 tons of sludge had already been removed by Friday morning. Despite these circumstances, the 2013 edition went down in history as one of the most peaceful festivals. Overall, a third fewer incidents such as injuries or theft were registered. After the end of the festival, the organizers described the visitors and the helpers as the stars of the 2013 edition. The band Kings of Leon performed under constant rain and contacted the festival director Christof Huber with a personal email message during the festival. "The best festival appearance in the tour", it should have said in it. Despite «the wettest weather ever experienced at an OpenAir». In 2013, the readers of the commuter newspaper 20 Minuten voted the Openair St. Gallen again as the best Swiss festival.

In 2014 the festival was sold out for the fourth time in a row - and that at the beginning of January. On Thursday, admission was only via the West Entrance. This innovation, together with the waiting room from Wednesday, was viewed by the organizers, the audience and the media as a complete success: For years, admission has not been as relaxed and fast as this year. The introduction of the tent depot can also be seen as a success: despite bad weather conditions on Sunday, 75% of the tents were taken away again. The weather stayed sunny and warm - it only rained on Sunday. In contrast to this, the 2017 festival was again characterized by rain, but even though it was not sold out for the first time in six years, the organizers were satisfied.

A festival visitor produces an average of 1.5 kilograms of waste per day. During the entire festival, a total of 178 tons will be collected.

The 2015 festival is already sold out at the beginning of January. The new stage “Musig uf de Gass & Startrampe” offers four regional bands the opportunity to perform at the festival on Thursday evening and is met with great enthusiasm.

The 2016 festival is sold out again at the beginning of the year. For their 40th birthday, the OpenAir St.Gallensich and the visitors are giving the headliners Radiohead and Mumford & Sons of their choice, a fireworks display and a new quarter with street art, street food and lovely decorative elements. “Plaza” is the name of the area on the hill opposite the Sitter stage and it is already inspiring in its first year. The new "Bloom" restaurant - realized in a cozy, exclusive style - is particularly popular with older visitors.
