China is a hard rock band from Winterthur , Switzerland . She celebrated international success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, her albums reached the top 10 in Switzerland and good placements in the English, German and Japanese charts. China also gained notoriety through their changing singers. A different singer can be heard on each of their albums.

history

China was founded in 1985 by drummer John Dommen and signed a record deal with Phonogram in 1988. The name comes from Dommen's five-month winter stay in China. With the line-up Math Shiverow (vocals), Claudio Matteo (guitar), Freddy Laurence (guitar), Marc Lynn (bass) and John Dommen (drums) they recorded the self-titled debut album. The two Krokus musicians Marc Storace (vocals) and Fernando von Arb (guitar) support you with the recordings . Storace sings some backing vocals and Von Arb writes the song Back to You for the album.

A tour as support for Victory follows as well as another concert tour with Bonfire . Shiverow and Lynn leave the band after the tour. Marc Lynn joins Gotthard a little later , who at that time still called themselves Krak. The new singer is former Krokus guitarist Patrick Mason and Brian Kofmehl from Killer joins the band as the new bass player .

The next album Sign in the Sky is much more mature than the debut, not least due to the collaboration with producer Stephen Galfas. The released single In the Middle of the Night reached number 11 in the Swiss charts, the album landed at number two. Mason doesn't stay in the band for long, though.

Already on tour he will be replaced by the American Eric St Michaels, with whom China will record the live album China Live and the next studio album Go All the Way . St. Michaels moved back to America in 1992, which is why China did the following gigs with three different singers. Krokus singer Marc Storace takes on the main part. An appearance recorded by the Swiss radio DRS Live uff dr Gass from 1993 appears seven years later under the title Alive 2000 on CD.

In 1995 China released their album Natural Groove , which again features a new singer. Douglas McCowan is responsible for the vocals and Giovanni Giorgi is on the drums. After the album, the band is put on hold. In 2000, the band completed a China Revisited tour with three singers again (Math Shiverow, Eric St. Michaels and Marc Storace).

In 2003 there were rumors that Patrick Mason (vocals), Claudio Matteo (guitar), Freddy Laurence (guitar), Brian Kofmehl (bass) and John Dommen (drums) were working on a new studio album. In May 2004, Freddy Laurence (aka Freddy Scherrer) joined Gotthard as a replacement for Mandy Meyer .

In 2007 China reforms itself again and will be on stage again for the first time on June 2, 2007 at the Spirit of Rock .

After successful concerts in 2008 and 2009, China released their fifth studio album in 15 years, Light Up the Dark, with the new guitarist Mack Schildknecht . This is followed by four concerts in the summer as support for Krokus.

On November 8, 2013, the new studio album "We Are the Stars" was released, which was produced by Alice Cooper guitarist Tommy Henriksen.
