Span is a Swiss dialect rock band that was founded in 1972 as Grünspan .

The founding members were Christoph Kohli ( bass , vocals ), Matthias Kohli ( drums , vocals), Georges Müller ( guitar , vocals), the singer Daniel Stöckli and guitarist Gualtiero Bonaconza. In 1974 the single Bärner Rock was recorded, which brought Grünspan the first success.

history

In 1975 the band renamed itself Span . Soon after, the guitarist Gualtiero Bonaconza, who musically moved towards jazz-rock, and the lead singer Daniel Stöckli left the band. Dänu Siegrist followed in the footsteps of Gualtiero Bonaconza , who was discovered by Peter Mac Taggart on the cathedral platform when he played his dialect songs on an acoustic guitar.

In 1976 the guitarist , singer and songwriter Housi Wittlin moved into the Hämlismatt commune , which the band members lived together until 1991. In this formation they produced two singles in English "Little Bit Of Sun / Love Provider" (1977) and "You Need A Driver / Evi" (1978) at the request of Laico Burkhalter - then Artist and Repertoire Manager at EMI Records a single in Bern German "Dr Eint u dr Ander / Peanut Butter" (1979). However, it was not successful and Span lost its identity as a dialect rock band. Housi Wittlin stayed with Span for three years as planned from the start.

In 1978, Span produced four LPs with Marianna Polistena and Polo Hofer under the name Polos Butterding. In 1982 the first and supposedly last album Tschou zme was recorded in this formation . The record company Ariola in Zurich was won over to distribute the record . The record was sold 8,000 times in a short period of time and provided new motivation. In 1985 Dänu Siegrist finally left the band. Stefan W. Müller ( keyboard ) joined the team. Span played in this formation until the end of 2008, when the drummer Matthias Kohli left to do his own music projects. He was replaced in 2009 by Matthias Nydegger ( drums , vocals ).

other projects

Christoph Kohli and Stefan W. Müller have been touring with songwriter Roland Zoss and the animal songs ABC Dino Xenegugeli since 1999 . The album launched the Bern German children's song. In 2002, Jimmy Flitz, the first Swiss dialect rock band for children, started. In 2006, Kohli joined Bubi Rufener (including Allschwil Posse and Sugarbabies ), who reactivated his old band project Boob and together with Sam Mumenthaler and Peter von Siebenthal (both ex Züri West ) released the CD The Ono Sessions in 2007 and together the whole Year to tour Switzerland . The four musicians already played together with the party band Backbeat .
