Editors are a British indie rock - band with strong bonds in New Wave - and post-punk spectrum.

history

The beginnings of the band go back to the year 2000: The original line-up - Tom Smith , Chris Urbanowicz, Russell Leetch and Geraint Owen - initially called themselves pilot . They met at Staffordshire University in the Music Technology course . After various name changes, the departure of Owens and the “newcomer” Ed Lay , the band members finished their studies in 2003 and moved to Birmingham . In 2004 they signed a contract with Kitchenware Records and called themselves Editors from then on .

In January 2005, the debut single Bullets appeared , with which they hit the British single charts straight away. The single became one of the most played songs on alternative radio stations. The band confirmed this success with their second single.

The second album An End Has a Start was released on June 22, 2007, the first single was Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors . On October 9, 2009, the third album In This Light and on This Evening followed .

In a BBC interview, the band stated that the first demos for another album already existed and that work on it could begin after the Berlin Festival 2010.

In April 2012 guitarist and keyboardist Chris Urbanowicz left the band. This decision was made with a view to the future musical direction and with great sadness. The planned festivals for 2012 were not canceled. Instead, Justin Lockey joined the band as guitarist and Elliott Williams (mainly keyboard / synthesizer, at concerts in 2014 temporarily represented by Nick Willes). The appearance at the Belgian festival Rock Werchter in the summer of 2012 is considered a baptism of fire for the new line-up. Work on the fourth album continued together in Nashville .

On May 7, 2013, advance sales began for the fourth album The Weight of Your Love , which was released in July 2013 as CD, vinyl and MP3 download with eleven new tracks.

In October 2014 the band retired to Scotland to work on the fifth album. Using the keyword “E5”, she kept her fans up to date with photos or small videos via social networks. In April 2015, the band and their fans organized a kind of scavenger hunt online: It was announced that a track from the new album had been hidden on a CD “out there”. A fan found three days later the song "No Harm" as a hidden track on a current PIAS - sampler and placed it at YouTube one.

The sixth album “VI OLENCE” followed in March 2018, typographically recording the counting method known from its predecessor (E6 = cf. Roman VI). In February, the band presented the album to a small group of fans - winners of a video competition - in a cottage in Surrey in advance, including an acoustic set that was also broadcast via a Facebook live stream. The associated tour (EU, USA) took place in spring, followed by a festival campaign in summer. She led the band back to Werchter, Belgium, as headliner at TW Classic. A continuation will follow in autumn (UK, EU).

style

Like Bloc Party , The National , The Killers , Interpol or The Bravery , their style is heavily influenced by bands like Elbow , Doves , Joy Division , the early REM and Echo & The Bunnymen . The baritone voice of their singer Tom Smith, which is reminiscent of Ian Curtis from Joy Division or Sivert Høyem from Madrugada, is particularly striking .

Others

  • The medieval rock band In Extremo covered the song An End Has A Start from the album of the same name on their album Sängerkrieg . Contrary to the original, however, whose chorus line says "You came on your own, that's how you'll leave", in-extremo frontman Michael Robert Rhein sings "You came on your own, that's how you live".
  • During the Accelerate Tour 2008 of the band REM , Editors were active as support act at some concerts.
  • In 2009 the editors were represented on the Rhythms del Mundo album "Classics" with a Latin version of "Walk on the Wild Side".
  • In June 2010 the band took part in some concerts, such as B. on June 19th in Goffertpark in Nijmegen , as opening act for the British band Muse on their Resistance tour . Before that, both bands played at the 25th anniversary of Rock am Ring .
  • In winter 2011 singer and front man Tom Smith released an album with Christmas songs under the title Funny Looking Angels together with Andy Burrows (formerly Razorlight among others ) .
  • The band supports the charity Oxfam . For example, Oxfam employees are allowed to promote their cause at Editors' concerts; In June 2015, the band provided a 300-piece LP test pressing of the new single "Marching Orders", which was sold in selected Oxfam stores in Great Britain, Belgium and Germany.
