Madrugada ( Spanish / Portuguese : Dawn ) is an indie rock band from Stokmarknes , Norway . The band's sound can be described as melancholy and powerful, a style that they consolidated over time on five studio albums.
Band history
Madrugada emerged in 1995 from the band Abbey's Adoption . After initial success in Norway, their first album Industrial Silence (released in 2000) achieved a high level of recognition throughout Europe and beyond.
In 2002 drummer Jon Lauvland Pettersen left the band and was replaced by Simen Vangen, who drummed on the third album Grit and on the following concerts. He left the band two years later for other projects. On the fourth album, The Deep End , he played drums on seven out of twelve songs, but the album's booklet no longer identifies a drummer as a member of the band. The band continued as a trio. Live they were now supported by Erland Dahlen, who played drums on the remaining five songs of The Deep End .
The live qualities of the group, valued by fans, were first recorded in 2005 on the album Live at Tralfamadore . The Tralfamadore in the title is not an actual (event) location, but a reference to the fictional extraterrestrial world that Kurt Vonnegut described in his novel Schlachthof 5 or the Children's Crusade .
In May 2007 the band began to record a new studio album. Unexpectedly, guitarist and founding member Robert Burås was found dead in his apartment on July 12, 2007. Until a few days before his death he was busy writing new songs for both Madrugada and his own side project My Midnight Creeps . Burås was 31 years old. No information was given on the cause of death.
Vocalist Sivert Høyem and bassist Frode Jacobsen finally decided to stick to the original time frame and met with John Agnello , their producer and sound engineer, in autumn 2007 to continue the recordings at Grammofon Studio in Gothenburg and to finish and mix in November in New York. The single Look Away Lucifer was released on December 10, 2007 , the album Madrugada was initially only released in Norway on January 21, 2008, and since May 9, 2008 it has also been available in Germany.
In August 2008, Madrugada announced that they would be retiring indefinitely after Christmas 2008. However, work is underway to release previously unpublished material. In 2010 the new edition of the debut Industrial Silence was released as a deluxe edition , remastered and with a second CD containing B-sides and unreleased pieces from the time the album was made. In Scandinavia, a double CD was also released with the programmatic title The Best of Madrugada among 28 songs, an unpublished piece called All this wanting to be free , which was created during the production of the last studio album.
In June 2018 the band announced on Facebook on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Industrial Silence album two concerts in Oslo for February 2019, followed by an extensive comeback tour through Europe. For the 75 shows, the remaining members of the original line-up were reinforced by Cato Salsa and Christer Knutsen. In March 2019, Half-Life, the band's first new song since 2008, was released.
