Angelika Express is the name of a formation founded in 2002 by the singer, guitarist and songwriter Robert Drakogiannakis .

Band history

In 2002 the trio offered some songs on their own website. The Wuppertal music label Paul released the debut album, which was called Angelika Express like the band . The group took on as many tasks as possible themselves, from production to the design of the artwork. The album received some recognition , especially in the independent scene, and received some very positive reviews in music magazines, but did not attract any attention from the wider public.

Her songs combine the melodies of pop music with the hard and loud playing style of punk ; the texts of the early years mostly outline everyday situations and emotional worlds in the lives of young adults.

For the thematically very political EP I am not an American (2003) and the second album Everybody's Day (2004) the group got support from the music producer Jem and relied on a professional design. These records were also received very positively by a small audience. At the end of 2004 another EP was released (title Phantome ), which stylistically differed significantly from its predecessors: the melodies are slower, the arrangements more complex. The live album Pornography followed in 2005 , named after a piece on the debut album.

In August 2005 Angelika Express announced their temporary dissolution. Singer Robert Drakogiannakis continued his career as one half of the electropop duo Planetakis , Jens Bachmann and Alex Jezdinsky continue to make music together as Overschmidt . Both also play in other bands, Bachmann for a short time with Neuser , Jezdinsky with Klee .

In 2008 Drakogiannakis released new songs as Angelika Express for free download. To finance the next album, Golden Trash , 500 shares in the project were sold to fans (based on the model of stock corporations ), who received 80 percent of the proceeds. About 70 percent of the shares were sold after just one day. In times of the financial crisis and the decline of the sound recording industry, this crowdfunding aroused widespread media interest, including reporting in today's news.

At the end of 2009, 40 unreleased recordings from the band's early phase were released under the title Hosen runter! The Angelika Demos 2002–2005 made available as a free download.

The 2010 album The Dark Side of Power was included by Drakogiannakis in the "Special Edition" blank CD and an activation code with which buyers can download and download a "second part" of the album in the form of eight additional songs from January 2011 could burn onto the CD themselves.

In 2018 the band played at the Mind the Gap Festival in Kassel .
