Pretty Lights , actually Derek Vincent Smith (born November 25, 1981 in Fort Collins , United States ) is an American musician.

history

Derek Smith was already involved in hip-hop during his school days. After he finished high school, he began studying at the University of Colorado in Boulder , which he quit after a year in order to concentrate fully on his music. His priority had now changed to rave . Since 2006 he has released five albums and three EPs, all of which are available for free download on his homepage. Pretty Lights had their first live appearances in 2009 and 2010 at major American festivals such as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival or the Ultra Music Festival . In 2011 he founded his own record label under the name Pretty Lights Music . Michal Menert , Break Science , Gramatik , Paul Basic , Eliot Lipp and SuperVision are currently under contract with this label . On 2 July 2013 he released the album A Color Map of the Sun . For this album Pretty Lights did not use samples taken from other songs as before, but instead produced its own sample collection with the help of other musicians. For this he traveled through the USA and used studios in Brooklyn , New Orleans and Denver , in which he produced and recorded.

A Color Map of the Sun was nominated for Best Dance / Electronica Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards .

Pretty Lights' music is mainly based on samples and is a mix of many genres including electronic , funk , hip-hop , soul and trip-hop .
