Michael Hutchence (1986)

Michael Kelland John Hutchence (born January 22, 1960 in Sydney , Australia , † November 22, 1997 ibid) was a singer in the Australian rock band INXS .

Life

When Michael was four years old, he moved to Hong Kong with his parents Kelland and Patricia Hutchence, his then two-year-old brother Rhett and the then 15-year-old half-sister Tina . The reason was that Kelland Hutchence had accepted a job there with a large Australian trading company.

In 1968, when the Hutchence family were still living in Hong Kong, a toy manufacturer was looking for a little boy's voice for the tape of one of their toys. The choice fell on Michael Hutchence, who then recorded his first song and whose singing career began at the age of eight.

In 1972 the Hutchence family returned to Sydney from Hong Kong. Michael Hutchence's parents divorced in 1976. Michael then lived temporarily with his mother and half-sister Tina in California , USA . In 1977 Patricia and Michael moved back to Sydney.

On August 16, 1977, the anniversary of Elvis Presley's death , Michael Hutchence founded together with Andrew Farriss ( keyboard / guitar ), Tim Farriss (guitar), Jon Farriss ( drums ), Kirk Pengilly (guitar / saxophone ) and Garry Gary Beers ( bass ) the band The Farriss Brothers , which renamed itself INXS in 1979. INXS first played under the new band name on September 1, 1979 in Toukley, Australia.

In addition to the musical successes with INXS since the mid-1980s, Hutchence also appeared in a few smaller film roles, e.g. B. in the film Frankenstein Unbound (1990) by Roger Corman .

In 1989 he produced an album of the Australian band Max Q .

From 1989 to 1991 Hutchence was in a relationship with the Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue . When Hutchence ended the relationship, the Kylie Minogue broke the heart, as she recounted in the documentary Mystify (2019). From 1991 to 1994 he lived with the Danish model Helena Christensen . With the ex-wife of the Irish musician Bob Geldof , Paula Yates , he had a relationship from 1995. He met her on the British TV show The Big Breakfast . From this connection the daughter Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily (born July 22, 1996) was born. After the death of her mother Paula Yates on September 17, 2000, Bob Geldof first received custody of her and later adopted the girl.

Michael Hutchence was found naked and hanged in a hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in Sydney on November 22nd, 1997, shortly after the INXS album Elegantly Wasted was released . According to findings of a coroner he died by suicide . Paula Yates, however, contradicted this representation and suspected an autoerotic accident . The funeral service was celebrated on November 27, 1997 in the Anglican St. Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney. According to unconfirmed press releases, Hutchence's fortune, estimated at AUD 10 to 20 million, disappeared without a trace after his death.

Because of his nearsightedness, Hutchence occasionally wore prescription sunglasses. In 1992, he lost his sense of smell and taste in a bicycle accident. As a kind of incarnation of the great visual similarity of Michael Hutchence with the true lead singer of the Doors , Jim Morrison .

Afterlife

Michael Hutchence's death was dealt with by the band U2 , whose lead singer Bono was his close friend, in the song Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of (2000).

Michael Hutchence's sister Tina Hutchence published the biography The Real Michael Hutchence: Just A Man with her mother Patricia Glassop, who died in 2010 .

Richard Lowenstein, who directed many of INXS 'videos, including Burn for You from 1984 and Never Tear Us Apart from 1988, made a documentary about Michael Hutchence. The documentary Mystify had its premiere in April 2019 at the Tribeca Film Festival . The film was released in German cinemas on January 30, 2020. The film soundtrack also includes two previously unreleased songs and all of INXS 'big hits.
