Idles ( spelling : IDLES ) are a British post-punk band that was formed in Bristol in 2009 .

history

Idles was founded in 2009 by singer Joe Talbot and bassist Adam Devonshire, who knew each other from school. The other band members joined later. The first EP Welcome was released in 2012. Another EP, Meat , was followed in 2017 by the debut album Brutalism . Triggered by the miscarriage of his daughter, singer Joe Talbot got into an alcohol addiction , which he had successfully treated. The second album Joy as an Act of Resistance was released in 2018 . The third studio album Ultra Mono is announced for September 2020 .

style

Idles often deal in their texts with social inequalities in society and their associated frustration. They are therefore compared to Sleaford Mods and Fat White Family , British bands who denounced social grievances during the Brexit era .

In Mother from the album Brutalism , Joe Talbot sings about the death of his mother, who was last in need of care. It is also shown on the corresponding album cover. In addition, the miscarriage of his daughter in June from Joy as an Act of Resistance is discussed.

Joe Talbot often uses puns and sometimes ambiguous intonation so that certain passages of text can be interpreted in a variety of ways. An example of this is the song Love Song ( Joy as an Act of Resistance ), in which it is not clear whether he sings “Modern Love” or “Mother in Law”.

Musically, idles are often assigned to punk or post-punk , which they themselves reject.

reception

Both the debut Brutalism and the successor Joy as an Act of Resistance received mostly very positive reviews. Joy as an Act of Resistance was placed in numerous annual best lists. It was voted album of the year 2018 by the German music magazine Visions as well as by the British radio station BBC Radio 6 . It was also voted 3rd and Mojo 6th by UK newspaper NME . The German newspaper Musikexpress placed it in 7th place. Readers of the e-zine Plattentests.de voted the album in 2nd place.

Idles were nominated for the Brit Awards in the British Breakthrough Act category in 2019 , but the award was won by Tom Walker . However, they won the Kerrang in the same year ! Award for best British newcomer.
