The Presidents of the United States of America is a post-grunge band from Seattle ( USA ).
Band history
The band was initially signed to a small local label from Seattle. There they released their self-titled debut album, which was then licensed by the major label Columbia Records in 1995. For this album the band received Grammy nominations . Two more albums for Columbia followed by 1998 (including the compilation Pure Frosting ).
After the temporary separation in 1998, the band members devoted themselves to various projects. Dederer founded The Gentlemen with Duff McKagan , and Ballew and Finn were also active in other bands. In 2000 the band got together again, initially only for a single. Her new, meanwhile insolvent, label MUSICBLITZ convinced her to produce another album, which received good reviews, but fell far short of expectations in the USA with 25,000 units sold. In 2004 the Presidents founded their own label, on which they released another album. After getting the rights back to their debut album, they re-released it on their own label.
Since 2005, Dederer has occasionally been replaced by Andrew McKeag.
In 2008 the album These Are the Good Times People was released .
In late 2013 the band released a new album called Kudos to You! announced, which was financed, among other things, via the Pledgemusic platform.
style
A trademark of the band is the use of only partially strung string instruments. Ballew said in an interview that he took this idea from Morphine singer Mark Sandman, with whom he lived for some time. Ballew also stated that writing songs on a two-string guitar worked like a filter for him, through which he could let influences like Cheap Trick , Nirvana , The Cars or Soundgarden flow, creating something of its own.
