The Parlotones are a South African indie rock band from Johannesburg .

Band history

The band's singer and songwriter , Kahn Morbee, learned to play guitar at the age of 17 and began writing songs. In the summer of 1998 he met drummer Neil Pauw at his high school. They recognized their common taste in music and formed the band. At university, Morbee met guitarist Paul Hodgson, who joined the band. Hodgson's younger brother, who could play guitar, piano and bass, completed the band as a bass player. The Parlotones played as a quartet for three years before recording John Boyd in July 2002, who added a light synth and sound effect to the music.

In 2006 the band signed a contract with the international division of Universal Music . The contract, which included France , Japan , Germany , the Netherlands , Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom , began with the single Beautiful . In Germany, the music was played on the alternative rock broadcaster Motor FM. The music video for Colorful reached MTV Europe via Dubai . In 2006 The Parlotones won the SAMA Award for best rock album with Radiocontrolledrobot . The single Overexposed was the theme song in the short film FHM World's Hottest Woman .

In 2007, the international artist agency Primary UK, which also operates Panic! at the Disco , Allen, The Cure , Fall Out Boy and The Streets represent the band under contract. The album A World Next Door to Yours was produced in Bellville and was released in late 2007. According to bassist Glenn Hodgson, The Parlotones were inspired by the Beatles and The Rolling Stones as well as by Coldplay , REM and Snow Patrol .

On July 7, 2007, The Parlotones played at the Live Earth concert in Randburg .

In 2008 The Parlotones signed a record deal for Germany, Austria and Switzerland with the indie label eastZone music . In October and November 2009 The Parlotones were on tour in Germany and were accompanied by the Krefeld band Oh, Napoleon . Her album Stardust Galaxies was released in Germany on June 4, 2010 . With the track Push Me to the Floor from the album Stardust Galaxies , they performed at the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup . ARD made the song Come Back As Heroes from the same album the ARD World Cup song 2010.

In 2011 they released three albums - two live CD / DVDs and an acoustic album. The Parlotones won South African Music Awards in three categories. In October 2011 they played two concerts in Cape Town and Johannesburg as the opening act for Coldplay. With the album Stardust Galaxies they achieved double platinum status in their home country .
