biography

Childhood and Australian Idol

Matt Corby was born in Sydney and grew up in the suburb of Oyster Bay. He was influenced early on by gospel music from the church and toured himself with a church band. In 2007, at the age of 16, he took part in the Australian talent show Australian Idol and reached the final. There he sang the winning song Here I Am , but lost to Natalie Gauci and came second. After the show, Corby took part in Natalie Gauci's winning tour and had his own appearances.

The first three EPs

The record label Sony BMG was considering signing a contract with Corby, but decided to give the very young Corby time to consider whether he would like to sign the contract. He decided against Sony BMG and released his debut EP Song for ... on the Scorpio Music label in 2009 .

In the same year he settled in London for a time . Here he played small shows and met with the Communion label , where well-known artists such as Ben Howard or Michael Kiwanuka are under contract and whose founder Ben Lovett is a member of the British folk rock band Mumford & Sons . Corby's second EP My False was published by Communion . In London he learned the songwriting and recorded the third EP Transition to Color , which was released in autumn 2010, also through the Communion label. Before returning to Australia, he gave numerous live shows in London and performed at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin .

In 2011 he supported the British band Elbow on a national tour. He also took part with songs on albums by international artists such as Julia Stone and Passenger .

Into the Flame and Resolution

On November 11, 2011, Corby's fourth EP Into the Flame was released. With this EP he made it into the Australian charts for the first time . The highest ranking Into the Flame could achieve was rank 3. It became his most successful publication, going platinum six times . The song Brother was chosen as the best song of the year at the ARIA Music Awards . Brother also received international attention and entered the Dutch charts, among others. In 2012 Corby toured the United States and Great Britain.

In spring 2013 Corby stayed in Los Angeles for several months to work on new tracks. After a year and a half break, Corby's fifth EP Resolution was released in July 2013 . The single of the same name reached fifth place in the Australian hit list and was awarded platinum three times. Corby also received the ARIA Award for Song of the Year for the second time in a row. On the Resolution Tour in October 2013 Corby performed in several major Australian and New Zealand cities.
