Katzenjammer is a folk-rock - band from Norway . It consists of Anne Marit Bergheim, Solveig Heilo and Turid Jørgensen, and until 2015 also Marianne Sveen, and was founded on December 12, 2005. The name of the band goes back to the comic strip The Katzenjammer Kids . At the same time, it alludes to a German loan word in the sense of cat music (but not in the sense of cat complaint in German) for bad, inferior music that has been adopted into Norwegian .
history
Bergheim (* March 22, 1982), Heilo (* December 24, 1981) and Jørgensen (* July 20, 1979), who studied music at the Nordic Institute for Stage and Studio (NISS) in Oslo , started the project initially with Tuva Andersen . After their departure Marianne Sveen (born February 21, 1981) joined the band. Through several successful concerts and participation in the popular TV talent show Kjempesjansen, the band gained a fan base. Appearances at the Norwegian music festivals as well as in the opening act of Kaizers Orchestra on their Norway tour ensured further popularity. In the vote for the annual listener charts of the station NRK- Urørt 2008 Katzenjammer took third place with the single A Bar in Amsterdam .
The band's final breakthrough came in early 2008 with a performance at the Scandinavian music congress and festival by: Larm . This had a lot of media coverage and brought the quartet to the renowned clubs in Norway. So they gave two sold out concerts at the Rockefeller Club in Oslo, which has a capacity of 1500 people. In September 2008 the quartet's first album, Le Pop, was released . Most of the pieces on the debut album were written by Mats Rybø (ex- Keldian ), are lively and are characterized by four-part singing. The texts are in English. The album brought the band a nomination for the Norwegian Grammy, the Spellemannprisen as best newcomer. The band opened the award ceremony. In 2011 her second album A Kiss Before You Go was released . The third album Rockland was released on the Vertigo label in January 2015 with eleven new tracks .
On January 3, 2016, Marianne Sveen announced that she was leaving the band.
Performance selection
Even before the release of the first album abroad, Katzenjammer toured in Europe and the USA. In spring 2009 the musicians presented themselves at the Eurosonic festival in the Netherlands and appeared in the opening act for the British band Keane at The O₂ in London . In March 2009 the band had a number of appearances at the SXSW in Austin, Texas . At the invitation of David Byrne , they performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester , Tennessee .
In Germany the quartet first appeared at the Fusion Festival 2009 in Lärz and at the Taubertal Festival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber . In 2010, 2012 and 2015 they were guests of the Hurricane Festival in Scheeßel , the Southside Festival in Neuhausen ob Eck and the Open Flair Festival in Eschwege . In August 2010 Katzenjammer played at the Bardentreffen in Nuremberg and at the Kulturarena in Jena . In 2011 they played at the Highfield Festival and the Gurten Festival in Bern ( Switzerland ) as well as at the Nova Rock and Picture-on Festival in Austria and in some German cities. In the early summer of 2012, the band was on a European tour. In the summer of 2013 Katzenjammer was the opening act for Die Ärzte .
style
The band is inspired by different styles and presents a diverse mix in their repertoire that sounds “ like Montmartre in Paris, like Russian circus, gypsy fairs and dark, smoky whiskey bars in Oslo” .
In addition to borrowings from bands like B52's , elements of jazz , rock , Balkan music, folk , country music and chanson flow into their music. The first single A Bar in Amsterdam was described as " Mariachi - polka with a hysterical trumpet theme". Their performances on stage prompt critics to compare them with Gogol Bordello , Dixie Chicks or Leningrad Cowboys .
Each member of the band masters several instruments, which are changed for almost every song during live performances. These include bass balalaika , acoustic and electric guitar , accordion , mandolin , piano , drums , harmonica , banjo , trumpet , ukulele , glockenspiel , kazoo and also improvised instruments such as metal buckets .
