All Because of You
All Because of You was the album's first single and was released in Finland in autumn 2005. The song is characterized by a polyphonic harmony singing as well as quieter verses and a livelier chorus. The single was initially played by the Finnish radio station SuomiPop and reached number 11 on the Finnish singles charts.
Romeo
Romeo , the second single from the album, was initially only released in Finland and was able to place it at number 4 in the charts. It was one of the songs that were recorded first, even if the lyrics were completely rewritten shortly before the recording because Samu Haber disliked it. It is one of the quieter pieces of the band.
Fairytale Gone Bad
With Fairytale Gone Bad , the third single, the band became internationally known. Haber thought of the melody for the song while riding the tram in Helsinki . The song begins quietly in the first verse, only drums and keyboard accompany the vocals. With the use of the electric guitar in the chorus, the piece becomes rockier. The song is about a failed relationship and the memories associated with it. In the video you can see the band standing in front of a wall and on a house roof while a projector shows videos of a woman as a memory. In Germany and Austria the song reached number three in the singles charts, in Switzerland and Finland the song was placed in second place.
Fairytale Gone Bad received a gold record in Germany , Switzerland , Finland and Sweden .
Forever Yours
Forever Yours is the fourth single from the album and was released on April 27, 2007. Lyrically it deals with the same topic as Fairytale Gone Bad , musically it is more rock-heavy. In Germany the song came in at number 35, in Austria at number 42 and in Switzerland at number 82 on the charts. In Finland, the song did not make it into the charts, but it was awarded a gold record.
Diamonds
The song was released on May 9, 2007 as the fifth single from the album. In the German-speaking countries, the single received little attention, in Finland the piece reached number 14 in the single charts.
Heal Me
The song reached number 58 in the single charts in Germany, and the single rose to number 16 in Finland.
Choose to Be Me
The last single from the album, Choose to Be Me , was released on February 20, 2008 and reached number 24 in the German and number 50 in the Austrian single charts. The song was also the theme song for season 8 in the German edition of Big Brother .
reception
On the Way to Wonderland was rated by only a few critics, with most of the reviews being negative.
Adam Greenberg gives Allmusic 3 out of 5 stars and complains that Sunrise Avenue have not come up with anything of their own and that their music does not stand out from other bands. He also says that although the songs are well arranged, the lyrics are not always good, which, according to Greenberg, is typical for non-native speakers.
Plattentests.de awards 3 out of 10 points. Critic Christian Preusser thinks that Sunrise Avenue's soaring will stop early because the album is way too boring.
The record received 4.5 out of 10 points from cdstarts.de. Critic Matthias Reichel wrote that On the Way to Wonderland was very catchy, but that the album was simply too good to carry people away. In addition, Sunrise Avenue played a sound that, according to the critic, had been heard a thousand times.
Susanne Lang gives the album 2 out of 5 points. She says that the record exudes a lot of joy and differs from most other Finnish bands, but that it sounds completely soft and has no recognition value.
