William S. "Bill" Guttentag (born January 1958 ) is an American screenwriter , director and film producer .

Life

Guttentag began his film career in 1987 when he wrote additional material for the drama Hot Shot - The Path to Victory with Pelé . In the following year he was with Malcolm Clarke screenwriter, producer and director of documentary - short film You Do not Have to Die . The film, made for HBO , about a boy's battle with cancer, won an Oscar in 1989. By 1995 he received three more Oscar nominations, but without being able to win the award again. In 1995 his documentary 5 American Kids - 5 American Handguns was nominated for an Emmy , and in 1999 he received his first Emmy for his contribution to the television series America Undercover . In 2002 he shot the reality show Crime & Punishment , a spin-off of the Law & Order series, for NBC television . He won his second Oscar in 2003 for Twin Towers , a documentary about two brothers who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In 2007 Guttentag shot the film drama Live! With Eva Mendes in the lead role . . In the same year the documentary Nanking about the massacre of Nanking , which won an Emmy, was made .

Guttentag has been teaching at Stanford University since 2001 .
