You Don't Have to Die is an American documentary from 1988.

Jason Gaes is six years old and has Burkitt's lymphoma . Jason is taken to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester , Minnesota . By the time he gets there, the tumor caused by the cancer has grown rapidly. The boy talks about his chemotherapy and the surgical interventions that led to his recovery. Jason writes a book about his experiences, which his older brother Adam and twin brother Tim provide with illustrations. With this book, Jason wants to give other children with cancer confidence.

In 1989 , the film received an Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category.
