Jan Fabricius ( Jacob Merkelbach )

Jan Fabricius (born September 30, 1871 in Assen , province of Drenthe Netherlands , † November 23, 1964 in Wimborne , county of Dorset , England ) was a Dutch playwright and journalist .

Life

At the age of 20 he left his homeland and went to the Dutch East Indies (today: Indonesia ) as a printer in order to earn a living. There he quickly made a career as a journalist. After ten years, a liver disease forced him to return to the Netherlands, where he then worked as editor-in-chief for Wereldkroniek , Spaarnebode and Nieuwe Courant . At the urging of Frits Bouwmeester, an early deceased brother of the actor Louis Bouwmeester , Fabricius wrote his first dramas: Met de handschoen getrouwd , Eenzaam and Derechte lijn , in which India plays a major role.

His plays have been performed hundreds of times. Nevertheless, in 1910 he moved back to Batavia , now Jakarta , to start his own newspaper. It was mainly medical reasons that prompted him again to move to Europe, where he settled in Paris . It is noteworthy that he wrote his Dutch plays Onder één dak (playing in Drenthe) and Ynske in West Frisian .

With the outbreak of the First World War he returned to the Netherlands. In the following years he experienced his greatest successes. With the performances Dolle Hans , Totok en Indo and Nonnie he ensured full houses. His career ended with the Great Depression and the outbreak of the Second World War . He remained productive, but his success slowly faded.

Fabricius moved to England, where he died in November 1964 at the age of 93. His son Johan Fabricius was also a well-known writer. Both are buried in the cemetery in Noordlaren , a district of the municipality of Haren .

In his hometown of Assen, a street and a school were named after him, which have since been torn down.

In Germany, his plays in northern Germany were often performed in Low German , including in the Hamburg Ohnsorg Theater , such as Leentje Marten in March 1952, directed by Hartwig Sievers . In addition, several pieces have been produced as radio plays since 1925 . In the ARD radio play database, the following can be read on the page about the radio play Leentje Marten from 1962: The plays by the Dutchman Jan Fabricius have enriched the programs of the Low German theaters with many successful pieces. Similar milieu and similarities in the way he thinks and speaks of his stage characters can be found everywhere in Low German.
