Johan Fabricius (born August 24, 1899 in Bandung on Java in Indonesia , † June 21, 1981 in Glimmen , Netherlands ) was a Dutch writer , illustrator , journalist and adventurer .

Life

Johan Fabricius was born on August 24, 1899 as the son of the playwright and journalist Jan Fabricius (1871–1964) in the Dutch East Indies , but lived in the Netherlands from 1914 onwards. There he trained as a painter at the Royal Art Academy in The Hague . In 1918 he went to the Austro - Italian front in Pavia for a few months as a war correspondent and war painter for the First World War . He wrote down his experiences there in 1975 in De oorlog van de kleine paardjes ( The war of the little horses ). With Eiko, the boy from the Reiherhof (original title (Dutch): Eiko van den Reigerhof ) he published his first novel in 1922 . The youth novel and at the same time Fabricius most famous and repeatedly reprinted work Kapitän Bontekoes Schiffsjungen (original title (Dutch): De scheepsjongens van Bontekoe ) appeared shortly afterwards in 1924.

In 1925 he married Ruth Freudenberg, with whom he had three children.

In total he wrote over 100 novels, including many books for young people. In 1934, one of his works was filmed for the first time with The Girl with the Blue Hat (original title (Dutch): Het meisje met de blauwe hoed ) published in 1927 . He received the CW van der Hoogt Prize for the book Komedianten trokken voorbij , published in 1931 .

At the beginning of the Second World War , Fabricius managed to escape to Great Britain in 1940 , where he worked as a newscaster and commentator for the Dutch part of the BBC . After the war, in 1945 he worked as a correspondent for the BBC and The Times in Asia , including in the Dutch East Indies. After a long detour via China , Japan and the USA he returned to Great Britain, lived there until 1956 and has lived almost continuously in the Netherlands since then.

After the death of his first wife, he married Anna Cornelia Bleeker in 1968.

Johan Fabricius and his father are buried in the cemetery in Noordlaren , a district of the municipality of Haren .
