Job profile in Germany

The main professional requirements are:

  • The ability to speak German "moderate standard wording " (standardized by the conventions of pronunciation duden)
  • A microphone suitable for microphone
  • Reading competence of texts of all subject areas and their neutral and understandable presentation for listeners and viewers
  • credibility

Added to this are quick reactions and a comprehensive general education , with television also a “telegenic” appearance and a confident handling of the camera situation. At least in their job advertisements, the broadcasters of the ARD repeatedly point out that a university degree in a humanities discipline is welcome.

News anchors work in shifts around the clock and, in addition to their actual job, also have to speak texts for the various editorial offices of the broadcasting houses. In many broadcast houses, the speakers are now working on the conception of news programs.

The earlier definition of the job descriptions “speaker” (as a presenter ) and editor (as “ author ” of the message text) is therefore becoming increasingly soft. Instead of the classic "speaker", often with an acting career, the "editor at the microphone" is usually used today.

  1. News anchor / news anchor. In: gehalt.de. Retrieved on April 19, 2015 : “That's why many news anchors come from the acting field. There the voice is practiced and correct pronunciation is learned. (...) However, many news channels now rely on journalists who work as news anchors. This is because, for example, actors who just read someone else's text sound less believable. But credibility is one of the qualities a newsreader needs to have. This credibility is generated not least through emphasis, facial expressions and gestures. "
